Carter's P.O.V

There was silence in the van. The air was stuffy and hot. My black shirt clung to my skin. All I could think about was what Josephine was going through right now and if she was okay.

My mouth was dry. Hopefully, she was still alive.

I looked over at Luna and like always she was calm and focused, already analyzing how we were going to break into the building, get what we needed, and get out.

I tapped my foot to the rhythm of the moving van trying to distract myself. Before I could stop myself. I noticed that I had been biting my nails.

A broken nail wedged it's way down my throat. I began coughing and hacking trying to get it out. I heard a laugh from Luna as she was watching my discomfort.

"We're going to find her."

"And if we don't?"

"We carry out the plan and find as much information as we can on the Dark Horses."

"I'm not leaving without her."

"Then why are you so hell-bent on her not surviving in there. She's tough. I know she can handle whatever they throw at her."

I didn't reply. She was right. I don't know why I had already accepted defeat. Stay strong Josephine. We're coming. Then I thought of something.

"Stop the van."

"What! Carter, what is it now? We're wasting precious time."

"We have to make a stop first."

"A stop to where?"

I ignored her and gave the driver the address.

"Williams.." There was venom in her voice but I stayed mute.

If I told Luna where we were going I knew she wouldn't approve. When the car pulled up in front of a white house I hopped out of the van and raced to the doorstep.

Thankfully Luna had stayed in the van. A lady that looked like she was in the mid-forties opened the door. She smiled at me. Her dark completion matched with tight dark curls that made me assume she is Josephine's mom.

"Can we help you?"

I noticed a man with a stern face appeared behind her. That had to be Josie's dad. They both looked exhausted and weary. Her dad had dark rings under his eyes and they were puffy and red as if he was crying.

"Yes. I am Carter Williams." I pulled out my badge. It was fake but it looked really authentic.

"I'm with the FBI." She took my hand and shook it firmly.

"Oh! I'm Eleanor Jones and this is my husband Richard Jones." She gushed.

"My team and I are on the case of looking for your daughter Josephine jones."

Eleanor cheerfully babbled. "That's splendid news!"

"Yeah." Josephine's dad mumbled as he began to tear up again.

My shoulders straightened and I stood up taller. I looked at them both in eyes before I spoke. "I promise you that I will bring your daughter back home."

When I was done with the Jones and said my goodbyes. I shuffled back to the van, ready to face Luna.

She rolled her eyes at me. "Was that really necessary?"

"Yes. Her family is worried sick! They need to know that at least some people are looking for her."

"You could have blown our cover."

"Yeah right.  I did the right thing. They need reassurance and hope that their daughter was safe."

Luna flicked her eyes towards me. "Did they need reassurance or did you?"
