Chapter 8: Key to Victory

"How do you do it?" Levi asked as you both attempted to sleep again, he broke the silence.

"Do what?" You sat on the edge of the mattress with him right across you.

"You're whole squad was irradiated during the 23rd, how you managed to get over something like that?"

"I don't, even if time passes I'm never going to forget that. But that will remind me to keep my distance from other people. So if something unfortunate happens. I can easily recover. Selfish huh?" You leaned back into the bed. "Those idiots," you grinned. "What were they thinking? Leaving me to carry the burden." A grunt escaped your lips. "Doesn't Eren remind you of her. Those pretty eyes, their enthusiastic attitude." You mumbled away. "When Isabel called you 'Levi bro,' I thought it was a cutest thing ever. She idolized you. How did you get over something like that?" Remembering his close friend's death was a stab to the heart. Levi ruffled his hair before answering.

"Just like you, a reminder to keep people in a distance. So I won't get hurt."

"But isn't hard, once you've fallen into their grasp, you can never get out, no matter hard you try. And when they're gone... you'll realize how much they meant to you." You bit your lip to hold back the tears that threatened to escape.

"Are you interested in anyone?" Levi's question shot out of nowhere leaving you to think about what he just said. "What I'm saying is, have you fallen for someone?"

"No." You lied. "In this world, there's no time for love. It's all about surviving. Falling in love would just... i don't know... cause problems later on."

"And what do you mean by 'problems?'"

"Imagine it like this Levi, if you fell in love with someone, but they died in action later on. Wouldn't that tear you up inside? To see that special someone, you would want to spend you whole life with, dead! The pain that it leaves you in is worse that a thousand needles to the heart."

"How would you know that? Have you fallen in love yourself, Lahnet? Only to be heart broken?" He crossed his legs.

"No, but I've seen someone go through it." You ran your fingers at the memory of your poor mother's reaction to her husband' and son's death.

"May I draw your attention to the front!" Erwin gathered all of the scouts attention around the mess hall. "This is mainly for the 104th training corps, we welcome you into the Scout Regiment. Along side me are your superiors, let me introduce them. Standing beside me is Lance Corporal Levi Ackerman, he is in charge of the special operations squad. Beside him is Captain Y/N Lahnet, a reserve Captain and the scouts' training instructor. Leader of the 4th squad, Hanji Zoë who also the one who oversees Titan research. Lastly, squad leader Mike Zacharias. That is all, you may resume." With that said the new recruits went along their business as they finish up their breakfast.

"Captain Lahnet!" Eren waved at your direction. With a smile, you made you way towards his table to greet the boy.

"Good morning. You better finish your meal, you'll need that energy when it's time to train."

"Good morning m-ma'am, I see that you've fully r-recovered!" Armin stood up with a salute. You responded with a grin.

"Correct me if I'm mistaken, Mikasa right?" You placed your hand on the girl's shoulder. The familiar face looked up at you.
