Tap

Bright morning light filtered through the sheer curtains hanging over the second floor window. With the sun came the August heat. The tapping infiltrated her dreams and drug her back to reality.

Mina lifted a corner of her blanket to glare at source of the sound. A branch from the tree close the building was repeatedly swinging against the glass in the breeze. After several more minutes of the ungodly sound, she shoved the covers off the deal with the it.

The window creaked as she shoved it open and a layer of dust rose up from the windowsill. It wasn't like she'd had any reason to open her window within the entire month she had been in the dorm. The only thing outside was dirt, pollen, bugs, and worst of all... people. She almost shuddered at the thought.

Her hand reached out for the offending branch just as the wind swept it further back. She leaned out more from the window in hopes of catching it. Just a little more and she would have it. Her palm pressed against the thick layer of dust that she should have cleaned when she first moved it. As she leaned out just a bit more for the branch, her finger tips brushed the wood and she lost her balance.

Mina tumbled forward toward the ground. Her feet hit first with a sharp snap followed closely by white hot pain shooting through her left foot up her ankle. She laid still for several minutes while waiting for the pain to subside and her breath to come back. It was just her luck that she would fall out a window just days after threatening to jump from it. She huffed and pushed herself up. It only took one attempt to realize she couldn't put weight on the injured foot without wanting to sob.

She pulled herself up against the base of the tree and fished through her pajama pants pockets for her phone. There weren't many people on the campus that she knew and even fewer that she could actually call for help. Her fingers lingered over her contact list before finally selecting one and hitting the call button.

"Hello?" He had actually answered. And on the first ring!

"Hey.. I know you're probably busy and I hate to bother you but umm.. I kinda need help."

"You need help? Why? Are you okay? Did you get hurt? Did someone hurt you?" His questions came in rapid fire succession until she cut him off.

"Stop! Listen, this is embarrassing and I don't want you to laugh but I fell out my window trying to reach a branch that woke me up. I'm fine but I think I broke my foot."

There was silence on the other end of the line for a few moments then it sounded like something was rustling against the phone.

"Are you still outside?" he asked.

"I am," she said.

"Send me a pin of your location. I'm on the way."

He hung up before she could reply. Of course he would know that if he stayed on the phone long enough she would change her mind. She was obviously in pain and out of options if she was calling him for help.

Mina laid her head back against the tree trunk while she waited.
