Souls that dream alone lie awake, I'll give you something so real
Billie's POV:
"Mamas, wake up," I nudge Hannah, who groans and turns over, picking up her phone to squint at the bright screen showing the time.
"Bil it's after midnight," she sighs and I jump out of bed, pulling the covers to the floor.
"Exactly!"
She glares at me and reaches for the edge of the comforter but I tug it away before she can grab it. Hannah flips me off but rolls out of bed, hitting the floor with another groan.
"What is the purpose of this," she flatly asks, sitting up on the floor. Her hair's a mess and she covers her eyes when I shine a flashlight from my phone in her face.
"Let's go out," I smile and she crosses her arms and doesn't respond.
"Just outside, to the pool, I want to talk to you about something," I find the courage to say and this piques her interest, and she finally stands and stretches. I grin and run up to her, picking her up from her waist and swinging her in a little spin. She looks more awake and goes to put on some leggings. I take the opportunity to feel for the ring in my pocket, relieved that through the crazy past hours, it's still there. But it doesn't belong in my pocket for one more day; I want to see it on her finger instead.
I shove it deeper into the pocket of my sweatpants when she turns back around, extending my hand for her to grab as we sneak quietly out the door. We tip-toe down the steps outside to the pool, stopping once we get to the gates that are locked. Hannah stops and stares at me, raising an eyebrow. I wink and link my hands together for her to step on and climb over.
When she's over and I'm at the top, I pause when I hear a rip.
"Fuck," I curse, noticing the tear in my pants. Hannah doubles over in laughter and I jump down, but she still manages to catch me by my hips. I push her shoulder and she finally stops laughing, and we walk over to the edge of the pool to dip our feet into.
"So what did you want to talk about?" she reminds me and my heart starts hammering, the noise so loud I can hear it beating in my ears.
"I--"
Before I can get the words out, Hannah grabs my hand and dives into the pool, dragging me down into the deep end with her. She still holds my hand tight when we come up for air, and I shove her away, laughing.
"Way to ruin the moment," I mumble, feeling for her to bring her closer in the dark. When she's close enough, there's just enough light to see the smile on her lips as she leans into me.
"I made it more romantic," she shrugs and I nod along, deciding to just go with it.
"Okay, fuck it I guess. I wanted to tell you this or uh, do this, for forever now. I'm tired of waiting for the perfect moment when every moment with you is perfect," I begin, and Hannah pushes my drenched hair out of my eyes, squeezing my hand under the water.
"I want to make this real, not that it isn't already, but I need to really know you're mine," I go on, and fish in my pocket, pulling out the box. Her eyes widen and her lips part, like she doesn't believe this is happening, and honestly, same.
"So, uh, wanna like, I don't know--"
I'm losing my fire so I open the box and show her the ring. I can't tell if it's the pool or if she's crying, but Hannah squeezes her eyes shut then snaps them back open. She breathes out when the ring is still there.
"Duh," she cries, throwing her arms around me and pushing my back against the edge of the pool in a kiss. It goes on forever and I don't want to stop, in case this isn't real. But it is, and I pull back a little, lifting her hand out of the water to slip the ring on. It fits perfectly, made for her.
"Billie..."
"Yeah?" I catch my breath, worried she'll take it back.
"I'm really cold," she laughs, her teeth chattering and I grin.
"Just hold on a sec... are we doing the right thing?" I question her and myself. Her eyes cloud over with sadness and I quickly rush to rephrase.
"Not this," I hold up her hand, brushing over the ring with my finger. "I mean, coming out about us. I don't wanna lose you, and maybe..." I drift off, not sure what happens next.
"Maybe we can just keep us a secret a little while longer until it's safe?" Hannah finishes my sentence and I nod, relieved she's been thinking the same thoughts.
"Yeah..."
"I think that's a better idea, if you're okay with it?" Hannah searches my eyes for answers and I smile back, whispering an 'okay' only for her to hear. I pull her back into my chest, holding her close to keep her warm. After a few seconds, she grabs my hand and pulls me into the middle of the pool, splashing me on the way there. She swims closer and I duck her head under, laughing as she comes back up coughing.
"I kept telling you you'd regret your little games," I smirk and she laughs, tossing her hair over her shoulder.
"You call that payback?"
I dive after her but miss her as she dodges me and swims away. After pouting, she succumbs and slides back into my arms for another kiss. The sound of my phone going off interrupts us.
"Ignore it, I'm with my girl," I say breathlessly and she nods, kissing me again. She mumbles against my lips "I'm not cold anymore," and I find myself smiling. Maybe I am lucky.
