18. Home Alone

I stayed in New York, living with Nick. I didn't have anywhere else to go and I didn't have the money to rent out a place. I stood in the kitchen cooking for the both of us. It had been a few days since I arrived and I was getting used to it.

"You still owe me a drink, Miyamoto!" Nick yelled from another room.

"What's stopping you from making it now?" I yelled back.

Nick came in a few seconds later, wrapping his arms around my waist. "Right but it's morning. I'll do it when I come home. I have an entire day of meetings and I'll definitely do that for you." He kissed my cheek. "I'll be back later. You start on Monday, alright?"

"Yes, I know. You told me already," I replied. "Now take some breakfast before you leave."

Nick kissed me. "Yes, ma'am."

I laughed and handed him some food. He ate quickly before leaving with a goodbye kiss. I ate as well and sat in the living room. I watched some tv for most of the day. When I got too bored to watch tv, I decided to take a walk around to know my surroundings better. As I walked through the neighborhood I saw a lot of people. The streets were busy and people were always rushing past.

Hours later, I returned back to Nick's apartment. I started cooking for Nick when I saw how late it was. I was almost finished when Nick came home. He hugged me from behind and kissed the base of my neck.

"Hey," I greeted. "How was work?"

"It went decent," Nick replied. "How was your day?"

"Relaxing," I replied. "I took a walk around and watched some tv. Dinner's almost ready."

Nick breathed in. "Smells delicious. You're an amazing cook."

"Thanks," I replied. "Can you grab some bowls?"

Nick pulled away and got bowls for both of us. We ate together at the table and joked around as we did. We caught up as we went and I told him what had happened to me after I left. I had still worked for SHIELD but I had been gone on mission after mission so I rarely came around the headquarters.

When we were done, Nick helped me clean everything up. It took us only a few minutes before we were done. Afterward, we went into the living room. Nick put on some music and he grabbed my hand. I smiled at him as we started dancing. I rested my head on his chest as we danced around.

He held me gently and hummed the song into my ear. We slowly rocked back and forth to the beat. Nick spun me around and I laughed as he pulled me back in. Nick kissed me. My breath caught in my mouth and I hugged him tighter.

Nick pulled away and tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. "I love you, Tessa."

I placed a hand on his cheek. "I love you too." I played with his patch string. "Can I say your eye?"

Nick pulled his patch and it was gruesome. The scratches had set in and his eye was cloudy. I gently traced over the scars. Nick leaned into my touch as I rubbed my thumb under his eye.

"I know, it isn't pretty," Nick murmured.

"It's absolutely fine," I softly replied. "I think it's perfectly fine."

Nick smiled gently. "Thank you, dear. I didn't know if you would like it."

"I would never judge you for something like that," I replied. "Goose got you good, didn't he? Do you still have him?"

Nick shook his head. "He died a few months ago."

I frowned slightly. "I'm sorry. I know how much you liked that cat."

Nick chuckled. "He was a damn good cat after all. Do you want to watch some movies?"

"Sure," I replied. "What do you have?"

Nick showed me what movies he had. We chose one and I cuddled up against him on the couch under some blankets. I ended up falling asleep and woke up as Nick carried me to his room. I moaned softly as he laid me down.

He kissed my forehead. "Goodnight, dear."

"Goodnight," I mumbled as I rolled over.

Nick left for a few minutes before coming back in. He laid beside me and I cuddled against him. I fell asleep in his arms, sighing as I did so.
