Heart of Gold

Chapter 24

It's our court date our adoption was on the final leg but today we were battling about guardianship. I sat tapping my feet a nervous habit Eric sat behind me his hand on my shoulder for comfort. The Casper's sat at the other side of the courthouse in suits my hatred for them being concealed. The Judge entered the room Judge Saunders. I knew him he was Clementine's father he gave me a small wave.

"The Judge knows you?" Emma asked.

"Kind of a few weeks ago I treated his daughter." I whispered to her.

"He might take our side." She said hopefully.

"Okay so today we are here to discuss the guardianship of Mazey-Ann Gold." He said. "Before we start are the parties sure they want to proceed?" He asked.

"Yes." The Casper's answered and I nodded.

"Okay." He said. "According to my file and research Ms. Gold is more equipped to take care of the child." He said. My heart was pounding in my chest as he continued. "Is this a joke?" He asked looking at the Casper's. "Mr. and Mrs. Casper this says that you both have been in and out of rehab for the last thirty years. Mr. Casper you have been arrested for rape..." He trailed off.

"The charges were dropped." His lawyer said.

"Sit down." Judge Saunders said.

"After the victim was found beaten to an itch of her life. Mrs. Casper your arrest record is even worse." He grimaced. "It says here that your eldest son died from overdose, your daughter Cleo is in jail for prostitution, your youngest son has been charged with aggravated assault, child pornography, selling drugs to minors and burglary the only child that doesn't have a criminal record is your daughter Joanna who died from cancer." He read the file. I didn't know most of the things he was talking about especially the child pornography part.

"We are getting right your honour we just need another chance." Evelyn said.

"Neither or you are suitable candidates of parenthood." He didn't try to hide the disgust. "The child will go to a Ms. Kasey-Ann Gold. She is a better parent fit and according to her lawyers she was placed as legal guardian for the child even before the child was born and she is on the last leg of adoption." He closed the file.

"No, we want our granddaughter." Evelyn stood up. I think their lawyer knew they wouldn't win and just robbed them because they are fools. I thought this would take weeks probably months it just took two hours. So Mazey was mine and I didn't have to worry about them taking her.

The Judge left and I smiled at my good news. The Casper's didn't bother picking another fight with me they just left peacefully. Eric hugged me and we had a meeting with Emma. She waited on us outside.

"So the agency just called me..." Her face long. Eric held my hand tightly.

"What did they say?" My hands clammy.

"You're approved." She smiled brightly and Eric and I breathed.

"Thank you." I hugged her.

"I didn't do anything I just forwarded the papers." I let her go. "Now you two are parents go forth and produce more." She laughed and winked at Eric. We had work so the hospital was our celebration.

"We have to celebrate." I said. "Mazey's birthday is next week you and Paul and your children should come." I told her.

"Definitely." She nodded. "Okay I have another case in a few minutes." She said embracing me in another hug. "Kiss kiss." She said and left.

"We are parents." Eric lift me and spun us around.

"We are." I smiled.

"This is exciting." He admitted.
