ONE: MASON

Monday January 19th

Mason sat quietly in the lecture hall. Five rows from the front, nine seats in. Far enough that Dr. Collins wouldn’t notice her not taking notes, but close enough that she could still pretend to participate.

Today was one of those days where Mason didn’t feel the need to participate, and in all honesty she would have rather been hiding away in the bottom floor of the campus library, drinking a chai latte, and reading a novel for her English class. Instead, here she was. Sitting in Introduction to Psychology listening to Dr. Collins explain how the mind worked with relationships.

        Specifically romantic relationships.

Something Mason wasn’t sure she was particularly fond of.

        The idea of romance? Yes.

Being in a relationship? Check back at a later time.

But Dr. Collins continued, ignoring the hordes of students who were scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter before her. Mason had learned that Dr. Collins loved her speaking time. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2 pm to 2:50 pm was her time, and she was going to use it to the best of her ability. Even if that meant half the class was falling asleep in the back three rows of the lecture hall she would still continue her tangent.

Today, well today also seemed to be one of those days.

So Mason sat there, her yellow legal pad rested on the almost comically small desk attached to her seat. She was careful not to bump her elbow into the guy sitting in the seat next to her as she doodled in the margins. In an almost whimsical script she wrote out “I'll stay up all night, staring at the sky; you're somewhere on the other side” which were lyrics to her current favorite song Lullaby by Paradise Fears.

While she doodled she counted down the minutes, knowing that while Dr. Collins loved her time, she was notorious for letting out the class 5 minutes early so that she could beat the rush of parents at the elementary school her son attended.

As if on cue at 2:45 pm Dr. Collins closed her laptop and moved to the front of the room, her hands clasped together as she dismissed the class for the day telling them she looked forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday.

Mason stood and stretched out her arms, tired from sitting in a small chair for the last 45 minutes and apologized with a small smile when she bumped into the guy sitting next to her. She put her scarf around her neck and pulled on her jacket as she prepared to head out into the blistering January cold.

Already she wasn’t looking forward to class on Wednesday.

A/N.

Hey guys,

Thanks for reading this, just wanted to let you know that the songs mentioned in this story will almost always be on the side in the media section. If you have any suggestions don't be afraid of shouting them out, I love hearing new music.

As Always,
