Friday January 30th
Mason pulled her pillow closer to her, hugging it to her chest and she leaned against the headrest of her bed. After feeling every emotion that Mason believed was possible she had finally given up and just put in a Nicholas Sparks movie. If she was going to feel conflicted about a boy then why not do it in the most cliché and gut wrenching way possible.
That’s where her roommate, Audrey, had found her two movies later. Curled in a pile of pillows, a bowl of popcorn, and some twislers. Instead of asking any questions she pushed a few pillows over and curled up next to Mason to finish Safe Haven. After not talking for the last thirty minutes of Safe Haven and the first twenty of the Notebook Mason finally gave in. Telling Audrey everything that had happen in the last few weeks, how the first note appeared on her seat and how she was conflicted about actually meeting him.
“What if its really awkward in person?” Mason’s head rested in Audrey’s lap as she played with her hair. “What if he’s actually a really weird guy, or a serial killer, or something equally as odd. What do I do then?”
“What if it is really awkward in person?” Audrey countered back, “Or what if he’s perfect and a really sweet guy who’s genuinely interested in you?”
“That’s the problem! What if he is interested? What do I do then?”
Audrey stopped playing with Mason’s hair, “Honey, he’s not Thomas. He’s not going to just walk away if he’s actually invested. You can always ask all the “What Ifs” but you can’t let them control your life. ”
“I know that! Thomas was an ass. Andrew’s the complete opposite of that jerk. He’s sweet and he remembers things. He wants to know more about me, to get to know me.”
“Then let him.”
Mason sighed covering her face with her hands as she tried to sort out her tangle of thoughts. “What if it doesn’t work out?”
Audrey laughed a little, “Then it doesn’t work out. He’s asking to you if he can officially introduce himself, not proposing!”
“I just don’t know. What if he’s –“ Mason was interrupted by her phone singing out a song by Parachute, Kiss Me Slowly which was one of the songs Andrew had recommended last week.
She didn’t even look at the screen as she slid the bar to answer it, “Hello?”
And her heart stopped when she heard four words, “Hey, Mason? It’s Andrew.”
“Hi.” She smiled before fully processing what was happening. This was Andrew, her Andrew. Not just any Andrew, but Mason’s! And she was actually talking to him, not just messaging or writing. This is what his voice sounded like.
He sounded happy as he replied back with “Hi. How are you?”
His voice was masculine without being overly and it made her heart beat a little faster. “I’m good. You?”
Audrey watched her curiously and Mason mouthed back that it was Andrew on the phone.
‘Oh my gosh!’ Audrey pushed Mason off of her lap as she freaked out. ‘I told you he was a good guy.’
‘ I know,’ Mason mouthed back sitting up.
“Good.” Andrew’s response brought Mason back to the current matter at hand. Andrew.
“Did you just get off work?” To calm her nerves Mason began picking up her movie marathon mess.
“Yeah, what are you doing right now?”
Picking up the third empty bag of popcorn, “Nothing really. I had just been watching a movie with Audrey.” And talking about you, but Mason didn’t say that out loud.
“Would you like to meet me for coffee?”
“Wait, what?” Without thinking Mason dropped the empty bags, open mouth in shock.
Audrey watched her curiously, ‘What?’
Putting her hand over the mouth piece of her phone and pulling it a small distance from her ear Mason mouthed back, ‘He wants to meet for coffee.’
‘Right now?’
‘Yes?’
Without further question Audrey was up and rummaging through both of their closest. A shirt from Mason’s, shoes and another shirt from Audrey’s, a pair of pants from Mason’s all went flying through the room as Audrey threw them onto Mason’s now vacant bed.
Without missing a beat Andrew was rolling with the idea as well. “Yeah. We can meet at that Starbucks on 7th, it’s 24-hours now. I really like talking to you and I want to officially meet you.”
Mason was still trying to figure out what had happened to her life. Not even five minutes ago she was sitting there contemplating just not talking to him again. Now he wanted to meet her. “Please.” He begged and she felt her heart pull with that one word.
Not letting herself overthink it Mason responded, “I can be there in 15 minutes. How will I know it’s you?”
Both Audrey and Andrew seemed to whoop in excitement. “I’m in a blue plaid shirt and kakis. I’ll get you a drink. Just sit at a table.”
“Ok,” Mason breathed out, “I’ll see you then.”
“See you then.”
She hung up the phone and turned back to Audrey.
“What just happened?”
