Andrew held his breath as he noticed her walking down the carpeted stairs to take her seat. After agonizing over whether to give her the note or not he finally just laid it in her seat and prayed she'd find it. In the end he didn't even allow himself to think about it, he just had to act.
So now he sat, watching her out of the corner of his eye to gage her reaction. When the piece of white folded paper fell off her chair and hit the floor Andrew was tempted to pretend like he dropped it and pick it up, apologize for getting in her way, and move on with life.
But when she noticed the paper he stopped. Forgetting how to breathe he watched her look around for a second before finally opening the paper.
She looked confused and Andrew instantly regretted leaving her a note. And when she folded the paper back up Andrew wanted to shrink into his seat.
But instead of putting the paper into her backpack like he thought she would, she pulled out a pair of headphones. While watching Dr. Collins, who had begun her lesson she put them in her ears and used her hair to hide them.
Andrew continued watching from the corner of his eye as she scrolled through YouTube. As the video opened a wide smile appeared. One that showed that single dimple on the left side of her face.
He had to work hard to keep the smile off his face as she watched it twice.
Then she pulled out a piece of paper from her backpack and a pen and began doodling.
As much effort as it took not to smile, it took even more not to look at the paper she was drawing on and even more effort to pay attention to the lecture. Today was something about family relationships. Something Andrew felt comfortable enough focusing on and soon enough he was paying more attention to Dr. Collins than to the girl sitting next to him.
That was until Dr. Collins moved to stand in front of the lectern hands clasped and dismissed the class.
Andrew stayed seated as he watched her stand, slide her backpack over her shoulder and leave. Only looking back twice as she walked up the brown carpeted steps.
When he felt like he had waited long enough he stood and picked up his own backpack. On her chair sat the paper she was drawing on.
With a large smile Andrew picked it up. Lyrics from the song were drawn into her note and he felt his smile grow as he read the note.
