In which he won't stop fighting your battles.

"Steven, you can't keep doing my job for me," I said walking into Steve and I's shared bedroom. "I can handle myself."

I've been an Avenger for almost as long as Steve has and yet he can't seem to take me seriously as one.

We were on a mission to stop a bunch of terrorists in New York holding innocent people hostage. I was going hand to hand with a man who was a lot bigger than me, but I had more skill than him.

Just as I'd gotten him on the ground, Steve came around and knocked the guy out with his shield. I hadn't even got to have my fun with him.

It sounds like a small thing, but he's made a habit out of this. On another mission, we were in a Hydra base and I'd just taken a couple of agents down.

I was down to the last one, kicking his ass left and right. He hadn't even gotten a punch in, but before I could even put him down, Steve, once again threw the stupid shield at him, knocking him out instantly.

"I just want to keep you safe, Y/n." He said, shaking his head. "Am I supposed to be sorry for saving you?"

"Saving me?" I scoffed. "I'm not the innocent people we're sent on missions for. Me, you, and every single Avenger, we all have a job to do. Stop saving me."

He sat on the bed shaking his head in a disagreement. "I can't, I'm sorry."

I rolled my eyes at him and huffed a breath. I walked into our shared bathroom and slammed the door behind me. He's so infuriating. I get that he cares, but I'm perfectly capable of fighting my own battles.

It was hard enough proving to the others that I was worthy of fighting beside them without any powers or special abilities. The only people who believed in me were Nat and Steve. And now it seems like Steve just doesn't anymore.

"Y'know what," I heard Steve from outside the door. Suddenly it jerked open, an angry looking Steve in front of it. "I'm not going to apologise for caring about you."

"It's okay to care, but it's not okay to do my work for me as if I'm incapable of doing it myself." I argued.

"You do most of your own work anyway, I just finish it," His face started turning red. "I don't understand the problem!"

"Because you don't have anything to prove, Steve!" I yelled. "You're fucking Captain America. You jump out of planes without parachutes and throw yourself into danger to save people. All of your battles start and end with you! There's not one person that doesn't believe in you!"

"You don't think I believe in you?" He looked up to the ceiling in disbelief. "After all the fighting I've done with the others to keep you here? I believe in you, Y/n, I just don't want to risk you getting hurt!"

"It's apart of the job! And quite frankly, I like it!" His eyes narrowed in confusion. "You'd think out of all people, you'd understand that I love putting myself in danger for the safety of others! You take away the part of my job that I love every single goddamn time! Where's my sense of accomplishment?"

"Do you think it's fun watching you do these things?" He asked.

"You do the same things," I dry laughed. "But it's an issue when I do it, right?"

"I don't have to listen to this." He turned to walk out.

"You won't have to if you just agree to stop doing my job for me."

"No." He said, and walking to the door.

"Why?!" I screamed, which made him stop dead in his tracks. I knew I was screaming at the top of my lungs and that my voice would probably be out by the next day, but Steve just made my blood boil.

He turned in a swift motion and walked closer to me. I could practically see the anger as if it were tattooed across his forehead.

"Because I don't want to lose you." He said in a softer, yet still stern tone. "I hate going into battle with the one person that I love more than everything. I hate the fact that one slip up and I could lose you forever. So be mad at me all you want, but I'll never stop protecting you. Not when I love you this much. Not ever."

My face dropped at his expression that had changed completely after saying this. He wouldn't even look at me. He kept his gaze on the ground as I stood in front of him, not saying anything. I could only think of one thing to say.

I pulled him by his arms and hugged his torso, lying my head on his broad chest. He wrapped his arms around me and let out a breath. I could hear his heart beating rapidly.

"You won't ever lose me."
