Alexander's Office...

Aurora Devin's Pov

As I made my way to Mr. Alexander's office, this time, I didn’t need to force my way in. He had sent for me. His secretary, Alicia, gave me an open pass to walk straight in.

“Oh, Miss Aurora, before you go in, I just want to let you know... you're late. Yes, two minutes late. Mr. Alexander doesn’t appreciate tardiness. It reflects poorly on one's character,” Alicia said in that annoyingly condescending tone she always used, barely glancing up from her computer.

I ignored her, unwilling to give her the satisfaction of a response. Instead, I knocked on Mr. Alexander’s door. Receiving no answer, I pushed it open and quietly entered.

**********************
The only sound I could hear was the pounding of my heartbeat. Being in Mr. Alexander's office always made me anxious yet oddly satisfied. The air conditioning wasn’t helping either, sending chills down my spine as I inhaled the luxurious scents of leather, lavender, musk, and the faint aroma of coffee. Someone clearly had been working late.

I glanced over at his massive desk, a masterpiece of glass and expensive woodwork, but he wasn’t seated there. My eyes then wandered to the large window, showcasing a stunning view of the city. He stood there, back to me, engrossed in a phone call.

I was about to speak when I realized he was still on the call. I’d been so distracted by the room’s elegant details that I hadn’t noticed him before. His voice was calm, composed, yet authoritative—a man always in control.

“Are you going to keep standing there, or will you have a seat?” Mr. Alexander said without turning around, finishing his call.

Oh wow. His Chest!. I blinked, taken aback. I hadn’t noticed before, but his shirt was unbuttoned at the top, revealing a well-built chest. I quickly averted my gaze, focusing on the marble floor. Why was I suddenly so flustered?

“You surprise me, Aurora. There’s something different about you. And for the discussion we’re about to have, I want your eyes on me—not the floor. Understood?” he said, finally turning to face me. His sleeves were rolled up, revealing well-toned arms, and his grey pants looked custom-made, fitting his lean frame perfectly.

“Yes, sir. My apologies,” I said, forcing myself to look at him. For a moment, our eyes locked, his mesmerizing blue eyes making it difficult to focus.

“You don’t need to apologize,” he said, his voice softening as he moved to sit at his desk. “I’ve been busy with the legal work on a particular project, and since arriving at the office today, I’ve taken some time to relax while finalizing everything.”

He smiled briefly, and even though it was fleeting, it sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach. Then, without missing a beat, he handed me a file.

“What’s this, sir? Is it a new case? Do you want me to handle it?” I asked, eager for an opportunity to work alongside him. Mr. Alexander was not just brilliant in business but also one of the top lawyers in New York. He was practically unbeatable in court.

“Open it and read through,” he replied, barely glancing at me as he skimmed through another document.

After reading the file, I couldn’t hide my confusion. “Sir, this seems more like personal assistant work, not something for a lawyer. Would you like me to find someone to handle this for you?”

“No, Aurora. I already have someone for the job,” he said firmly but calmly, his attention still on the papers before him.

“Who, sir? If I may ask…I'm sorry although, you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”

“You don’t need to apologize or second-guess yourself, Aurora. I’ll answer. The personal assistant I found… is you,” he said in a deep, measured tone, standing up and walking toward me. He leaned casually against his desk, turning my chair so I faced him directly. His presence, the intoxicating mix of his lavender and musk cologne, and the intensity in his eyes left me speechless.

“I want you, Aurora. I want you to be my personal assistant for this project,” he said.

For a second, I thought he meant something else entirely.

“Umm… what about Cassandra? She’s more than qualified, and I’ve seen you two together…,” I trailed off.

“I’ve already made up my mind,” he said, his tone suddenly colder. He turned away, walking to a shelf where he kept confidential files, removing one and flipping through it. “Cassandra is handling a multi-million dollar case. I can’t pull her away from that, and the other lawyers are similarly engaged. You’re currently handling less critical cases, which makes you the perfect candidate for this role. Does that answer your question?”

His words stung, but I composed myself. I wouldn’t let him see how much they hurt.

“When do I start?” I asked professionally, crossing my legs and meeting his gaze.

“You start tomorrow. My father has stepped down from running the law firm to focus on our family's other business, a chain of five-star hotels and resorts. We’re opening a new resort in Thailand in three days, and I’ll be overseeing the legal work. I want you there with me. My driver will pick you up at 2 a.m., and we’ll head to the private airport to catch my jet. All your travel documents have been prepared,” he explained, then placed the file back on the shelf.

The shock of it all left me momentarily speechless. I had never been to Thailand, and now I was expected to fly out in less than a day?

“But, sir, this is such short notice. I wasn’t expecting—”

“I figured you might need things for the trip, which is why I made sure you had enough at the Chanel store. That was for this. I would have told you then, but I was with Cassandra, and it was her birthday. Anyway, pack what you feel is necessary. You’ll also be my date for any business dinners or events while we’re there.”

His words knocked me back. Date? Was he asking me out?

“I… I’m sorry, sir. What do you mean by ‘date’?”

“A business date. Nothing more. You’ll be paid well for the job, so don’t worry about that. I’ll also arrange for a personal stylist to take care of your wardrobe for the trip.”

“I don’t need a stylist, sir,” I replied quickly. “And I’m not doing this for the money.”

He paused, looking at me, his blue eyes softening for just a moment. “I know,” he said quietly, before turning back to his desk. “If you have no further questions, you’re dismissed. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I stood up, still processing everything. Just before leaving, I turned to him. “Mr. Alexander, I just want you to know that I’m not doing this for the money. I’m doing this because I want to help. Whether as a personal assistant or an attorney...”
