Aurora Devin's POV
Five days after the interviews.
Knocks on my door jolted me awake. Who could it be? Everyone in the house knew I slept late on Saturdays; it was my day to rest after a busy week. The knocking continued, and I groaned, reluctant to leave the comfort of my bed, especially after a rainy night that made sleeping even more tempting. Whoever was at the door must have a good reason to wake me.
With great reluctance, I dragged myself to the door. “I’m coming!” I called out, fumbling to unlock it. When I finally opened the door, I was surprised to see Mary, our housekeeper. I had expected it to be Cory, who often disregarded my Saturday sleeping rule.
“Good morning, Miss Aurora. I’m sorry to wake you; I know you like to sleep in on Saturdays.”
“It’s fine, Mary. Good morning. What brings you here?”
“A letter arrived for you this morning. It was delivered by the mailman, personally for you.” She handed me the envelope.
“Thank you, Mary. Is Mom cooking breakfast today?”
“Yes, she’s already in the kitchen. Breakfast will be ready in 30 minutes.”
“Okay, thanks!” I closed the door and turned my attention to the letter. Who could have sent me something personally? I opened the envelope and gasped in excitement. “Oh my God!” I shouted. I had been offered a job at Borgia & Borgia Law Firm! I couldn’t believe it. Known as one of the best law firms in America, they were very selective about who they employed. I knew I was capable, disciplined, and prepared for this opportunity, but I hadn’t expected to hear back so soon.
I rushed downstairs to find my mom in the kitchen. “Mom! Mom!” I called out, barely able to contain my excitement.
“What’s going on, Aurora? You seem thrilled!”
“Guess what!”
“Aurora, I’m not good at guessing. Just tell me!”
“I just got employed!”
“Really? That’s wonderful! I knew you would get the job!” Mom exclaimed, wrapping me in a warm hug.
“And not just any job—I got a position at Borgia & Borgia Law Firm! The letter arrived today. I need to tell Dad!”
“Oh, darling, he just left for a meeting. You should call and tell him, and also let your siblings, Morgan and Sidney, know. They’ll be thrilled!”
“Okay, Mom! Where’s Cory?”
“He’s probably still in his room. Let me finish cooking; breakfast will be ready soon.”
“Got it! I’ll call Cory to come down and join us. I’ll also freshen up and make some calls—maybe Mary can bring my breakfast upstairs if I take too long.”
“Okay, Aurora, but I’d love it if you joined us at the table.”
“I’ll try, Mom. Can I have a taste of the pasta you’re cooking?” I asked with a smile.
“Yes, of course!”
I sampled the dish. “Wow! Mom, this is delicious! This is why I call you the best cook in the world!” I kissed her cheek.
“Now you’re making me blush, Aurora. You always know how to touch my heart with your words.”
“Really, Mom? I got it from you!”
“Me or your father?” she teased.
“Both of you!” I laughed. “Alright, I’ll freshen up and call Dad, Morgan, and Sidney to share the good news, and I’ll tell Cory to come down for breakfast.”
