Mark began his new job by taking Jane to the CCG Main Office, she was obviously ecstatic when her dad mentioned it. He knew she felt extremely out of place and this was the only part of Japan that appeared familiar.

In his long, brown coat and ominous presence, Mark called for his daughter and lifted that haunting, silver case in his hands simultaneously.

Jane was dressed as she usually was: in bright, blinding colour. It could be knitted, denim, cotton or lace, Jane would wear it as long as she felt like herself. Unlike most of her friends who wore neutral colours, she prided herself in embracing the rainbow.

"So what's the plan?" Jane asked her dad as she jumped into his silver Mercedes.

"Well, I need to pick up my schedule, find my office and hopefully assume everyone knows English" Mark chuckled.

"Japan is quite academically accomplished, plus I'm certain they'll partner you with someone bilingual",

"I'm sure they will, but I still need to learn the language",

"Doing that is in our blood, much like the CCG. You'll be fine" Jane reassured as they entered the 1st Ward.

It was much too clean compared to their ward with sparking buildings and the Main Office central to its prospering security.

When the father-daughter pair pulled into the under ground parking lot, they proceeded to the elevator and into the sparkling interior of the CCG. It was completely immaculate with marble flooring and tall ceilings, the cleanliness reflected Jane's awestruck expression like a mirror.

"You must be Mark Fraser?" a blue-haired boy suddenly asked, his voice a single tone as his long face met Mark's chest.

He was quite a skinny boy with a simple suit. His tie was delicately tied and securely fastened in an official way; it made Jane believe this boy was important. Behind those grey orbs

"Yes, that's me" Mark confirmed.

"Good, I'm Kishou Arima and will be your partner" Arima introduced, extending his hand in greeting almost too emotionless while Jane quietly stood beside her dad.
"And this is?..."

"My daughter, Jane. She was hoping to join me on my first day, maybe even see if a part time job is open" Mark announced as he gestured to the tall girl.

"Most likely in accounting", and with those curt words, Arima escorted the pair to the elevator located in the middle of the floor.

All around, investigators and simple office workers kept their heads down and proceeded to work on every ghoul situation with thorough care. They put the UK branch to shame.

The elevator soon enough came to a stand still.

"This floor is accounting, they're holding interviews today",

"Don't I need a CV or something-",

"No, it is simply for a weekend position, do not worry".

Clearly the young investigator was trying to push Jane aside, especially as his eyes nudged her out of the silver box.

"I'll see you later tonight, Princess" Mark called before the doors separated the fearful and fearless.

Jane's chest suddenly hammered as she looked inward to the small cubicles littering the floor. This was so last minute she was swiftly combing through her hair with her fingers as she approached the reception to the right.

In but an hour and a half, Jane was interviewed and happily offered the job with the quick mention of her Special Class Investigator dad.

Despite how bad she should feel considering her accomplishment was due to her dad's success, Jane still had a job. With a quick message to her dad, the teen left the CCG with her heart set on becoming familiar with her surroundings. She at least needed to know how to navigate herself from the 4th to the 1st Ward.

With a slow twenty minutes of confusion, Jane gave up with a huff, falling onto a park bench as she did so.

She had no money, hardly any directional skills and a confusing travel system... Jane sighed deeply with frustration.

"Need some help?" a sweet voice spoke from the blue, confusing her until she looked beside her. Standing to her right was probably the strangest yet the prettiest boy she'd ever seen.

"What?" She asked, forgetting for a moment where she was.

The boy looked back at her in confusion before taking a seat next to her. Jane obviously shuffled to the left to grow distance from the stranger.

He had locks of dyed, blonde hair held back by an Alice band with narrow and long featured cast under soft, opal skin. He was long and lean but somehow muscular under that unnatural black jacket.

It was summer, why was he wearing something so thick.

Jane was barely able to function in shorts and a thin top, how did this boy manage to stay upright with jeans and a long, strange coat? The only thing that matched the sunny and warm weather was the dark, shades covering his eyes.

"I am sorry, I do not speak a lot of Japanese" Jane formally apologised, not yet used to the words tumbling off her tongue.

"I do n-not speak English" the boy stumbled out, pronouncing the L in English as if an R.

"That's nice" Jane tried to say sarcastically.

Then, with little thought, an idea suddenly popped into her head. With the fumbling of her phone and the jamming of her hand into her back pocket, Jane pulled up her language app and turned on the translator.

While the girl typed happily on her phone, Uta internally boiled. She was quite rude to ignore him and go on her phone he thought until she turned the screen to the ghoul.

Immediately, she pressed a button with the device between their two forms and smiled widely as a female, robotic voice spoke.

"Hello, I'm Jane, were you going to help me with something?" The phone said monotonously, shocking Uta as he realised her hidden intentions.

She nudged the phone in his direction.

Taking it reluctantly, Uta began to type where her small hand pointed.

"I'm Uta-" the electronic voice began,
"- you seemed lost".

"Yes, I want to get to the 4th Ward",

"That's great, I live there too" Uta typed back, causing Jane to look at him skeptically. However, she remained calm. He didn't seem like the person to be dangerous, but a ghoul...

Uta saw the human do a double take of him. She was unsure and that was understandable yet, she still took the phone and replied:

"I guess that means we'll be seeing more of each other".

Uta smiled widely at her answer, before standing and gesturing for Jane to follow. He didn't want to scare her, his intention was to gain the girl's trust and squeeze every ounce of tranquility from her meaty form.

If you didn't know. Uta in the original books meets Jane as she commutes to school, saving her from a molester and they get to know each other as he continues to escort her to school and back.

That is how their relationship began.

I knew I was going to change it but I still wanted that element of nostalgia for myself and original readers.

It may not be how it started but it's close enough.
