It was November with the air nipping at Jane's exposed cheeks and tickling her clothes with the wind that filtered through. Beside her, Victor talked her ear off with all the different places he wanted to see and food he wanted to try. All the while Jane could only see the spot she said goodbye to Yui and Akira.
"Hey? You okay?" Victor questioned his partner as he pulled his suitcase closer to himself. For the whole flight he realised that Jane truly was unable to shake off the past she had in this country.
"Just peachy" the Special Class Investigator smiled sarcastically until the face of her sister entered view.
Ever since she skipped out on Amber's wedding, there had been a tension between the two that even put her husband on edge.
"It's good to see you again Janey" Amber greeted in English, leaving Victor in the dark as Kazuto took their bags and gifted Jane with a welcoming smile.
"You too" Jane agreed.
"It's a shame you had to miss out on the wedding, wasn't the same without you" she quipped before finally driving both partners to the accommodation the CCG had provided for both of them.
She was back where she started, full circle and Jane couldn't do anything to prevent this inevitable fate.
When she met the house she was to stay in memories of her time in Japan filtered through her walls. Even the creak of the front door reminded her of the time she sprinted from her house to Uta's small hole in the wall. She found a refuge there that she couldn't locate anywhere else, there was a thing about that that Jane found darkly amusing as she drunk herself monthly into a stupor just to visit that haven once again.
At the threshold of her house with her bags laid lazily askew at the entrance, Jane pressed her hands to her hips and sighed deeply at the memories.
"Home sweet home" she greeted with deep-seated sarcasm.
Once she packed her clothes and skimmed her hands over the furniture, Jane felt the paranoia of Uta somehow finding her once again.
With each creak and sound bellowed by the house, the investigator Jane was morphed into a betrayed, seventeen-year-old girl with no one but a ghoul who understood her wholeheartedly.
Nothing felt worse than that singular fact Jane still couldn't deny.

"Finally, you're awake. I thought I would be out here for years" Victor joked with a corner of his lips raising into that sly smirk. If she wasn't still haunted by the mask maker she would've considered him.
"Speak for yourself" she moaned into her coffee.
"Hey! It's takes a lot to achieve this" Victor chuckled to run his fingers easily through his brown locks.
"Really? I didn't realise".
That hit Victor hard and even when he feigned hurt with a thick hand laid over his chest, it still clenched in pain. He wasn't any closer to her than seven years ago.
Finally, when they pulled up to the CCG Main Office, Victor suddenly noticed Jane's leg bob with an excitement he'd never seen from his partner before.
"Are you alright?" Victor made sure once again, attempting to place his hand on her knee before his partner quickly escaped the car and into the elevator.
Of course she waited for him and held the door open, she couldn't appear too eager as she itched to reach the ground floor.
Once the broad investigator entered the elevator, Jane quickly closed the door and pressed the G button. Feeling the box rise only made Jane's heart beat faster.
Even if returning to Japan seemed such a heavy ordeal for his partner, Jane was out of character to Victor as her eyes lit up with the monotone ding from the speakers.
Without a word or single notice, Jane speed walked toward reception where a familiar face entered view.
"Arima!" She called with a chuckle, her heart almost skipping a beat as she met the investigator face to face.
"It's nice to see you again Jane, as an investigator no less",
"And what happened to your hair? You look like a grandpa" Jane continued with a quirk of a smile tickling her lips.
Seeing Arima again wasn't as expected, he still had his square glasses and was tall enough to look over her, the only thing out of the ordinary was the stark white strands topping his head.
While lost in translation, Victor was left in awe of his partner. She hadn't smiled so wide in his presence nor looked so young compared to when she peered up at this man.
"Oh I'm sorry Victor, this is Special Class Investigator Kishou Arima, Arima, this is my partner Victor Autry" Jane introduced, thankfully know both French and Japanese fluently.
"It's great to finally meet you, every once in a while I get a call from Jane telling me how great her partner is, I'm slightly jealous" Arima said, his features remaining emotionless while he teased Victor. Yep, the Frenchman was extremely confused by the investigator before him.
"It's me who should be jealous. To know such an renowned investigator... how exactly did you meet?",
The question sent the three into a silence that could only be broken apart by two men Jane had never met before.
Of course she recognised Mado, the crazy man who constantly obsessed over ghouls and their extermination. But the young man beside him made her draw a blank.
"Investigator Arima" the young man greeted, bowing almost slightly as he recognised Jane's friend.
What did Koutarou Amon think of Jane Fraser at first glance?
Too friendly.
Despite just meeting Investigator Arima (or that was his assumption), Jane stood way too close and held a light in her eyes that said far more than a colleagues relationship was between them.
"Investigator Amon, Mado. This is Jane Fraser and her Partner Victor Autry-" Arima introduced, gesturing to both investigators with the most minimal smile, "- she was the daughter of my late partner, a friend".
"It's nice to meet you both. Pardon my partner, he can't speak Japanese" Jane excused, smiling widely as she finally felt some semblance of home.
However, outside of the four walls of main office, she knew she would revert back to the Jane Fraser she had been for the last ten years.
Who knew what she could do.
