"So how's school?" Mark asked his daughter as they sat in his office. She had just finished school and decided to join her dad for something to eat. It was just three weeks after Uta, Yui, Akira and herself had hung out, and thankfully she had gotten much more comfortable with Japanese in that short time.

"It's going good. It's pretty boring though" Jane sighed as she nudged her salad around the plastic container.

"Think of it as a restart of sorts, you've made friends I heard",

"Yeah, Yui and Akira. They're nice" the teenager smiled before she felt her chest tighten. Only getting closer to the two girls meant she was even closer to Uta (or she hoped to be).

They were holding conversations easier without her phone and he always seemed to be there to pick her up from school. He was supposed to be a grade above her but once he told her why he dropped out she understood.

"School wasn't a priority and after my family died foster-care wasn't the plan"

"They're always welcome if they want to come round" Mark reassured his daughter.

"I know they are, we've only just become friends though. It would be weird" She shyly said before Mark released a deep chuckle.

"I thought you all seemed close already",

"You wouldn't understand" Jane giggled awkwardly before a booming knock rapped against the door, jumping the student before Arima entered the office.

For a split second his eyes fixed onto the uniform clad teen, she was only two years younger than himself and still he saw his own presence in the girl. In some way she reminded him of a younger Arima.

"A call has come in about a clown in the 4th Ward" Arima seriously informed.

The mention of a ghoul in such a safe ward jogged Jane heavily, causing her knuckles to cloud over white as she gripped the arms of her chair.

With a quick glance to the huge window to her right, Jane saw the darkness consume the sky and leave her fearful.

I have to walk home in that?

Mark noticed from a mile away and could read his daughter's thoughts clearly.

"I'll get Investigator Nagasaki on it",

"What about us? We are clearly more suited for this job-" Arima attempted to defend however he was interrupted by her dad's firm voice.

"Oh, I'm going. Meanwhile, you're going to take my daughter home".

Jane visibly watched the investigator's face deflate with a deep seated frustration layered over with a empty, fed-up expression.

Arima escorting Jane to his car must've been the most awkward thing she had experienced.

While Arima felt the motor of his car rumble under the pair, he caught a subtle scent of ghoul masking the young Fraser. She wasn't doused in it however, it would strong enough -however- to indicate she hung around one regularly.

"So... What is it like working at the CCG?" Jane asked from the tense atmosphere.

She could barely claw at it with her soft tone.

"Boring" Arima simply answered.

"Boring? S-Sorry, I don't understand" Jane almost spluttered in shock.

"Once you've been doing it for a while, it doesn't seem so special",

"But I swear you're barely older than me? Don't tell me you were some teenage vigilante" Jane chuckled before feeling the investigator's silence wash over her.
"Damn, I would've watched that".

"No... you wouldn't".

Jane wondered if her saw through her then, maybe even took a peek into her soul and uncovered each secret she held.

"You know, you're creepily calm" Jane said aloud, almost forgetting who he was as the words drifted from between her pink lips.

"I'll take that as a compliment",

"You should-" Arima was almost shocked (key word: almost). "- I wish I could be that composed".

The rest of the car ride was oddly tranquil after that. Jane of course didn't know her dad's new partner that well but, she could tell there was a mutual respect between the two.

In Arima's eyes she was still young but held a maturity which resonated through the air nearly every time she spoke. In the meantime, Jane almost saw the investigator as an idol. He appeared well trained in his occupation and frighteningly cold with a warmness buried forcefully beneath those grey eyes.

"Just turn here" Jane indicated to receive a curt nod from the man.

Once they had arrived something calmed in Jane and instantly allowed her breaths to come regularly. It was clear underneath her quiet demeanour that she was scared for her dad but it seemed to dim as their house came into view.

When the vehicle had come to a slow stop, she was already out of the car and thinking to take a step toward the house before she suddenly froze.

"Hey Arima-" she called quietly against the night wind, poking her head through the passenger window, "- you'll promise to look after my dad, right?".

But the investigator remained silent as he kept his eyes before him. Should he make a promise that would inevitably break at the expense of her mental well-being?

Arima sighed deeply, tightening his grip on the steering wheel before speaking.

"I promise I'll do my best",

"That's all you can do-" she said surprising him, "- I can't expect a single man to do anything more, that's simply impossible"...

Arima could only sit in his car and allow those words to ruminate in his mind. The air whistled as it blew against the trees; even the leaves rustled a minimal tune before a car engine finally entered nature's orchestra.

"That's all you can do. I can't expect a single man to do anything more, that's simply impossible".

"Impossible she says-" Arima sighed, "- I guess the kid has a point".

_________ ✍︎

Hi! Here's a second part for today.

I feel like no one's answering the questions at the end because they're think they're fan questions or something but feel free to join in.

I hope you enjoyed this and the little relationship that's blooming between Arima and Jane.

Where would you live if you had the choice between anywhere in the world?

I'd like to live somewhere in the north like Greenland, Sweden etc.
