Jane drew a blank after a week, unable to decipher the reason behind the detector going off and with it never doing so again. That should've made a normal woman give up on their suspicions or no longer hold an ache that told them otherwise.
With all the stress from work and her relentless gut, Jane noticed a fatigue wash over her, constantly leaving her on the edge of consciousness. Victor even managed to find the woman dropping off at her desk as she finished her last report. Even with the patrols proving to the Japanese branch both Investigators were capable in their jurisdiction, the amount of paper work that accompanied the respect drowned the pair.
"Who's great idea was it to do so many patrols?" Victor groaned as he took another swig of his energy drink.
In the meanwhile, Jane had finished two cups of coffee and was speeding through each report. One ghoul after another popped onto her screen and forced her to vomit up her memories from her mind as if files in physical storage.
"It was my idea" she admitted guiltlessly.
"So you confess it's your fault we're going through this hell",
"I wouldn't necessarily call it hell",
"Then what exactly is it my friend?" he mockingly questioned before swivelling round in his chair, looking toward Jane expectantly as he waited for his reply.
"The waiting list", for the first time, she made Victor burst out laughing with her bored response.
"When's our due date to enter the fiery pits" he continued to tease before watching Jane's slight smile suddenly drop.
"Hey? Did I say something wrong?"."No no, you said something... I'm sorry, I need to go" his partner then quickly announced as she swiftly pulled on her coat, signed off her computer and swung her bag onto her arm.
"Wait! Are you really gonna leave me to finish all this!" Victor exclaimed in annoyance.
"Take it home! I'll see you tomorrow" Jane farewelled even when she heard the Frenchman's deep groans of frustration trailing behind her sharp heels.
Jane had never felt like this, not since she first heard Uta was a ghoul. Complete, undiluted fear was coursing through her blood freely as she practically ran to the nearest store. Her heart was thumping like a humming bird, her skin was covered in goosebumps and her hairs stood on end.
From an outside perspective she looked like any woman rushing home to escape the cold air of November but Jane knew what she was doing.
Worry for her health, anger at her stupidity, terror for what Uta would think.
With an automated ring that alerted her entrance to the store, Jane's eyes shot to the ceilings and read the signs until she read the allotted sign for her desires. Suddenly, at the realisation of what she was doing, Jane's feet slowed their step as her panic forced herself into a delayed motion.
"Please God" she begged insistently under her breath, praying she could just black out from this part of her life. The assumed series of events to follow only made her stomach drop from the horror of it.
But she was late. Her period was late and she couldn't believe what an idiot she was as she took a clear blue pregnancy test into her quivering hands.
The feel of the cardboard in-between her fingers, the brail against her skin, every sense felt too heightened as she gulped down her nerves and weakly made her way toward the counter.
It was a young girl serving as the cashier that night and Jane didn't miss the flicker of her inquisitive eyes to the box.
"Congratulations if it's positive" the girl then cheered.
Her wide, automated smile heavily juxtaposed Jane's fear and she couldn't help but snatch the extended bag from the girl's grip, shoot her a harsh glare and quickly leave the store.
Once Jane returned home, she threw her bag haphazardly to the side and ran up the stairs, taking the steps two by two before erratically pulling the instructions and digital test from the box. She bought the most expensive one to be dead sure of her results and didn't regret the amount of reading for a clear result.
The whole process took ten minutes. Peeing on a stick didn't feel sanitary and the nerves Jane was experiencing only worsened during the wait.
While her leg bobbed and thumb nail ran anxiously on her lip, Jane was suddenly jogged by the ringing of her phone.
It was Uta.
"Hello?" She answered, trying to calm her voice as much as she could in the meantime.
"Hey, where are you?" He asked.
Jane could practically see the formation of his lips as he spoke, it caused a slight sob to lodge in her throat.
"I'm-" she coughed to force her cries down, "- I'm running late at work, I'll make sure to see you tomorrow".
"You better, I'm getting lonely",
"Stop teasing, it's only been a few hours",
"Fine, I'll see you tomorrow",
"Tomorrow" she sadly echoed before running a hand through her locks of red and hanging up.
While she pulled together the strength to look at the test, her eyes remained fixed on the only photo she and Uta had. She didn't feel safe having evidence of his existence so close to the CCG so she cherished the thing and found the strength in his serene expression to glance at the test.
It was positive.
