Chapter 24
The day of the trial........
"Dina, thank you for being here. I'm so nervous." I whispered as she sat in the seat next to me in the court room.
I could see Jeremy and his tramp of a girlfriend, Diana, sitting on the side across from us. Diana had a designer handbag with matching sunglasses sitting on top of her head. She was chewing on a piece of gum and talking to Jeremy. They were holding hands and it made me disgusted to think that those hands use to hold me as a child.
I smoothed down my black pencil skirt and looked at Dina.
"Girl, you are going to do fine they must have files somewhere that he was an abusive father." She said.
That's what I was nervous about. I didn't know if they did.
I looked behind me to look a Daisal who was staring nervously at Jeremy.
"Hey. Everything is going to be okay." I told her and she looked at me. She nodded but I could tell she was still scared. I could understand why. If this trial goes wrong then she will be living with that bastard and I couldn't do anything about it.
I looked forward as I heard a door open and the judge walked in. It was a later aged and she slid her glasses up her nose as she stepped in the room.
"All rise." I heard from across the room.
I obeyed as did everyone else in the room.
"The case of Daisal Stone is now in session." A voice called.
Everyone sat after the judge took her seat except for Jeremy and I. The judge skimmed over her papers.
"The will of the late Jasmine Davis was called forward by Mr. Jeremy Stone as he claims he is the rightful guardian of sixteen year old Daisal Stone." The judge looked up. "So I'm guessing he's Jeremy and you are Rose. Your last names are the same. Are you related?"
"I'm her father." Jeremy answered. The judge looked at me.
"Well obviously there is a reason why you don't like him. Tell me everything." She said.
"Your honor, He's abusive. He abused my mom and I for eight years until he finally decide to abandon us. He hasn't been present in our lives for ten years and all of a sudden he wants to come back into our lives and take Daze away from me to do God know what with her." I said. The judge looked around the room.
"Do we have any record of Jeremy's abusive acts?" The judge asked.
An officer placed a Manila folder on the judge's podium. The judge took a minute to read over the documents.
"You have a trial later this month for the attempted murder of Mr. Cameron Harris. Were you aware of that sir?" She asked Jeremy. Jeremy scowled at me.
"Yes your honor." Jeremy answered. She looked at him.
"You do know that this will probably land you in jail." The judge said. I bit my lip to hold back a laugh.
"No mam. I didn't think I would go to jail. I mean the guy is still alive." Jeremy answered. The judge narrowed her eyes at him.
"Attempted murder could be just as punishable as following through with the murder Mr. Stone. Also, you are in no way responsible enough to raise a child if you are going to be on trial for trying to kill a man. Also you came in my court room this morning and wasted my time while also managing to disrespect me. I think I am ready to do my sentencing and closing remarks." The judge said.
"In the case of Daisal Stone, her sister Rosedal Stone receives the right of housing her until she becomes a legal adult. As for Jeremy Stone, he is sentenced to containment in jail until the trial of Cameron Harris's case in which he will most likely be sentenced to more jail time. Case closed." The judge said and hit her gavel on the block. She then nodded at me as I mouthed 'Thank you' to her.
Daisal came up and wrapped her arms around me and I laughed happily.
"I think this calls for celebration." I told her. She smiled.
This was it. I had my sister with me and I didn't have to worry if anyone could take her away from me again.
We watched as an officer put Jeremy in handcuffs and take him away as he struggled against him.
I smiled. My life was now complete. I could finally start the place in my life where I was free of worry and turmoil. Now I was closing an old chapter and creating a new one and I would go wherever life would take me.
