Second attack: it got worse

"Oi (Y/n)." Senku walked up to you.
"What's up?"
"Here."

He handed you a little katana-like knife.
"Oh my god, it's so cute!" you gladly took it and looked closely at it.
"Kukuku, mostly deadly." he placed his hands on his hips. "It's only in case of self-defense. Don't you go and pick on fights now."
"Sure sure~." you said as you put it in your pocket, your expression then became softer. "...you be careful okay?"
He smiled.
"Of course."

When Senku and the attack team left to get in position, you and Chrome were in the storehouse, just waiting for them to be done. Chrome often carefully looked out for any sign of them, and he was tapping his foot all the while he did it.
"Dude, you're making me stressed too." you looked up at him. "Sit down would you?"
"How can I be calm when they're risking their lives out there?!"
"Oh you get used to it, don't worry."

Seeing that he hasn't move for a while, you looked up again and saw him staring out in the distance with wide eyes.
"There's someone swimming towards the village." he said.
"What?"
You stood up and followed his gaze. Someone was indeed swimming to the shore side where all the boats were parked. And knowing every villager was instructed to stay in, this could only be bad news.
"We gotta go there!" Chrome exclaimed.

"But we have to walk across the bridge to get there." you suddenly put a hand on his shoulder. "Wait a minute."
"Huh?"
A moment passed with you thinking hard about something. Then you gasped.
"They knew we'd be focused on the bridge! It's a diversion!" you climbed down the ladder. "We gotta tell the other!"

You ran as fast as you could, Chrome not far behind. When you saw them in the middle of a battle, you completely disregarded Hyouga and his goons and made a run for the bridge. You also ignore Gen who was now in your side of the field which means his cover was blown.
"What the fuck are you doing here?!" Senku shouted.
"It's a diversion!" you ran passed him. "Someone entered the village!"
Everyone froze in shock while you kept on running, looking for whoever entered the village and stop whatever they were planning. While you were searching, Chrome checked on the villagers to see if everyone was still safe.

Suddenly, the bridge connecting the residential area and where Ruri and her guards were went down into flames. You noticed a young woman holding a torch, standing on the other side, and you were pretty sure she wasn't part of the village. She hasn't noticed you yet. You took the opportunity to step closer, tightly gripping your little knife in your hand.

When you were close enough, you suddenly ran to tackle her. But with incredible reflexes, she jumped over and landed behind you. She just looked at you.
"Give me that torch!" you shouted, glaring at her.
She didn't say anything and instead turned towards the houses, throwing the torch at one of them.
"No!" you let out.

Instinctively, you threw your knife towards her. It slashed her arm and she shouted in pain, but that was it and it dropped on the floor somewhere nearby. She held her bleeding arm and glared back at you before running away in a flash.
You picked up the torch and threw it in the water but it was too late. Because the houses were mostly made out of hay, and because of the violent wind, the fire quickly spread throughout the whole residential area.

You went back to Chrome who was getting all the children out and helped him get them to the lab and storehouse. Meanwhile, Senku and some men quickly gathered water from their supplies and ran towards the fire to try and put it out. Then they formed a chain from the river to the village.

While Ginrou was freaking out and not doing shit (fuckin dammit Ginrou!), you saw in the corner of your eye Suika standing nearby the Hyouga's group.
"Gahaha! Look!" one of them pointed at her. "There's a stupid brat that couldn't run away! After her!"
Suika went inside her shell and quickly rolled away, chased by the warriors.
"Suika no!" you called out for her, but it was useless.

Then it hit you like a brick. Where she ran off to, as a way to drive them away, it was the direction you guys took to get to the sulfuric acid spring.
Though you didn't understand the real danger here, you understood that there was a danger. Just the thought of her going near that place worried you to death. You ran to the lab and picked up two of the gas masks. God those things were heavy. But you pushed through it and went to the river as quickly as you could.

"Kohaku!!!" you called out for her.
"What is it (Y/n)?!" she said.
"Suika's leading them towards the sulfuric acid!" you handed her the masks. "Go after her please!" you pressed your last word as you pressed the devices against her chest.
She nodded and geared up before going after the little girl.

"I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this..." Senku said.
Though you still didn't understand what was actually happening, you trusted his judgement like no one else.
"If you do then go with her! What are you still doing here?!"
Senku would've smiled if the situation wasn't so serious. The two of you ran back to the lab to get the last gas mask and after you helped him getting it on, Senku ran to where Kohaku and Suika went.
"Be careful!" you exclaimed right before he disappeared in the forest.
Without wasting any time, you went to the river to replace him in the chain.

Those were some intense hours of non-stop work. Thankfully with the making of science you've done so far, you didn't felt as exhausted as you would at the beginning.

At last, the fire was out and though the village was in bad shape, no one was hurt. When Suika and the others were back, you held her tightly in your arms, overcome by a deep relief.
"Suika, that was so reckless!" you said, still holding on to her shoulders. "Don't ever do that again!"
She just nodded, looking down and apologizing. You gently patted her head.
"But you do it too." Senku smiled.
"Yeah," you looked up at him. "but when I do it it's..." you paused and glared at him before going back to Suika. "Just don't do it again!"
"You have no excuses." he chuckled.

You stood up and left Suika to be praised by everyone in the village for being the hero of the day. You looked upon the destroyed houses and Senku noticed your look of sadness.
"What's your problem?"
"...I wasn't fast enough." you looked down. "I couldn't stop her."
"What are you talking about?" he raised an eyebrow. "That chick's probably faster than our gorilla, there was no way anyone could stop her."
"I just... I just wish I did more, you know?"
"Are you serious?"

He sighed, shaking his head. You frowned and looked at him.
"That slash on her arm, you did it right?" he kept talking, knowing the answer was yes. "None of the attack team could've landed a single hit. So far, you did more damage than any of us."
"...Seriously?"
He flicked your forehead, making you yelp in surprise.
"Now stop saying stupid things!" he exclaimed.
"Jesus okay!" you said, rubbing your forehead.

He walked away, and without you noticing, he smiled, the kind that comes from the heart.
What you did today, and the way you handled the situation.
He couldn't have been more proud of you.
