You didn't know what a 'skarn deposit' was, and seeing that giant thing in front of you, you regretted never hearing about it.
"So wait." you said. "That thing is basically a clusterfuck of different rocks then? Just how exactly did that happen?"
"Kukuku, pretty much yeah." Senku smiled as he inspected it to know where to hit. "When underground water that gets heated to boiling point by magma deep within the earth, and flows through the cracks in a white stone called lime-stone or calcium carbonate. A whoooole lot of chemicals in that water mix together with the surrounding stones and causes huuuuge transformations in them. That's what creates these natural jewel cases."
"Damn." you smiled."I see! So only the stuff in the cracks are transformed, which leads to the stripey appearance!" Chrome said, good student that he was.
"In other words, it's by adding magma's power that we managed to get our hands on these transcendentally rare gems."
You glanced over at Magma.
'Did he notice?'
He was quietly staring at Senku with a serious expression.
'He noticed~.'"Alright, there it is!" he knocked on a specific spot. "The ore we're looking for is in this deposit! It's a stupidly hard rock, so when it comes to digging it out, this scrawny beansprout's all out of options."
"Yeah! We're counting on you mr. Number 1 power." Chrome said.
"...I'm not interested in attacking you head-on, and having the tables turned on me by your weapons of science." Magma said after he changed his axe into a pickax. "But when we've digging up treasures, even if I'm wielding a weapon, you're not on your guards are you?""Wha-?" you gasped when he suddenly raised the tool right above Senku's head.
"That's right! If I come at you from behind right here at the very end!"
You closed your eyes in a panic and heard a loud cracking noise. You opened them to see the pickax planted into the stone, right about Senku, who didn't look like he even flinched."I thought I'd be able to slaughter you." Magma said.
"Kukuku, well you're not wrong." he turned around. "And that's why, when we were at that pitfall, you instinctively saved me right? Back then, I knew you were trying to help me."
'I fuckin knew it!' you thought. 'He's not *that* stupid.'"Magma," Chrome said. "I'm sorry I looked down on you. You can go ahead and punch me once."
"At this point it's whatever." he took out the pickax. "It's no substitute for when I tried to kill you guys!"
In one big swing he broke the stone into pieces.
"We finally got our hands on the king of hear-resistance rocks!" Senku started to pick up the pieces."You know," Chrome said. "Tungsten's a pretty awesome ore but...the bond of friendship that the four of us have forged in this dungeon of gems...is far more valuable."
Your eyes widen, wondering if he really said that. A moment of silence passed before Senku and Magma's face twisted and you laughed.
"What the hell are you saying dude? Eww."
"Yeah eww."
"Sh-Shut up! I said it on impulse and regretted it the moment the words were out of my mouth okay?!"
"And *that* is cringe!" you pointed at him. "Little lesson on modern-language for you!"You collected a big amount of ore, as much as you loved watching those two science-boys having a blast, you and Magma knew you had to quickly go back to the village.
"Come on! Let's get out of here already!" he placed his bag on his back. "Skinny guys can't carry that much anyway!"
You opened the march on the way back.
"Hurry up!" Magma said.
"What's the rush dude?" Chrome asked. No clear answer was given. You knew it looked suspicious as hell, but you thought it'd only add to the element of surprise. It only got you more exited. The village getting in sight, Magma suddenly blindfolded Senku and picked him up before running ahead.
"What the hell Magma?! What are you up to?!" Chrome shouted. "Shit! Where are you taking Senku?!"
You tapped his shoulder. He looked at you and you smiled, putting an index on your mouth and giving him a wink. After you filled him in on the situation, the two of you walked back to the shed. You had to cover Chrome's mouth when he saw the new observatory. Though you were excited yourself. Inside, Senku was sitting on the floor, surrounded by everyone.
"Senku-chan~!" Gen spoke up. "Welcome back!"
"Huh? What the hell is-"
"It's pointless to beg for help Senku!" Kohaku said. "Everyone in the village is with Gen now!""...Heh. Could it be that you guys have finally realized that offering my head and science on a silver plate to Tsukasa, is the most rational course of action for the stability of the village?"
For a moment, nobody talked.
"...then I have just one request." he spoke again. "I saved your precious Ruri, that's the least you can do." he paused. "Let (Y/n) live here."Everyone looked at you. You were right in front of him, looking at him with no expression.
"Tsukasa probably isn't even aware of her existence, it's not her that he wants. Getting rid of her would mean getting rid of the last musician on earth. And that, would be an even greater shame..."
Another moment of silence passed, they were waiting for your reaction. You frowned and flicked his forehead. He shouted, more in surprise than in pain. Gen giggled.
"That," you said. "is for even considering the possibility of us being giant assholes."A few short seconds passed, and Senku didn't seem to have reacted. His mouth was slightly agape, as if he was at a loss for words. Yeah! Cause you played him! And you will take that medal to your grave!
"And," you helped him stand up. "today is the fourth of January."
"We heard it's your birthday Senku!" Kohaku said. "From all of us, here's your birthday present!"
"Happy birthday." you softly said before removing the blindfold, his eyes right in front of the lens. His eyes widen.
"A telescope..." he took a step back. "No, an observatory."
His back facing everyone but you, who were right beside him, he narrowed his eyes and his eyebrows furrowed. It squeezed your heart. It must've remind him of his life back in the modern world.
"To be fair," Gen spoke. "it was kinda made from my faint memories of it. Like, stick two lenses on a cylinder or~ something like that. Everyone in the village worked their hardest to put this together. And then, you know, we thought you'd be able to fine-tune it yourself later."
"Mind I add!" Ginrou pointed at you. "It was all (Y/n)'s idea!"
"I mean, yeah, but, I shouldn't be the only one praised for it." you played with your fingers, embarrassed and wanting to tell him to shut up. "So, what do you think?"Senku placed a hand on the telescope, silent. You felt more and more nervous. Finally he looked through the lens once again.
"Damn! You guys did a great job! This is really practical!" he exclaimed. "We can totally use this as an observatory tower against Tsukasa's army!"
"Uh...yeah I guess?" Kohaku said.
"A very rational opinion, as usual." Gen added.
You chuckled, feeling lighter. You knew he genuinely appreciated his gift.He looked at you, not saying anything, which just made you nervous again. Then he flicked your forehead.
"Ah! What was that for?!" you placed your hands on it.
"Payback."
"What do you mean?! I thought it was a nice role reversal for a change." you pouted.
"Do you want to reverse roles then?"
You looked at each-other, you thought for a moment."...no." you said with a little voice before wheezing.
"That's what I thought."
He turned around, smiling.
