You were awoken by Maria shaking you. As you opened your eyes to look at her with a confusing look, everything that happened a few moments ago came to your mind
It was just a dream... She's not really here. She can't be...
You tried to convince yourself, but the moment you sat up, your eyes landed on the woman you used to wake up to every morning, the woman who you were lucky to call your wife, the woman you loved with your very being, the woman you believed was dead...
Carol was pacing back and forth, as she used to anytime she was upset about something. She didn't notice you waking up, but you noticed a slight limp in her walking and made a note to ask ber about it after she has told you where the hell she's been all this time.
"How are you here?" you asked, ignoring Maria and the woman who came with Carol looking at you
Carol stopped and tensed after hearing your voice. She turned to you and gave you a sad smile in response
"Where were you?" you continued but all she did was throw a nervous look to the woman sat in front of me
"Will someone explain to me what the fuck is going on?!" you snapped when no one answered you.
The still unknown woman stood up and went to Carol's side to tell her something only she could hear. It looked like she was encouraging her to tell you something, but your body still burned with jealousy when her hand grabbed her arm.
Carol nodded to whatever the woman said to her and let out a nervous sigh, before taking a seat in front of me.
"I-it's a long story..." she began with a shaking voice.
"I've waited five years, this story will be nothing compared to those." you sharply say, immediately regretting your tone when you see her wince.
"I'm sorry..." her eyes started to fill up with tears, but she quickly wiped them.
"You have to understand that Mrs. Danvers has been through a lot..." the woman stepped in but you quickly interrupted her
"I'm sorry, who are you?" it didn't come out as you wanted to.
"I'm Ms. Simmons, Mrs. Danvers's psychologist" your face paled
"Psychologist?" your eyes widened and you looked back at your wife, who was staring at the ground, leg bouncing in distress
"Carol... What happened?" you asked with a lump in your throat, Maria taking your hand in hers.
Your wife's eyes snapped back at you. Those beautiful eyes that once held so much love and joy, now held dread amd pain.
What happened to you, my love...
Your heart was breaking for the woman in front of you.
"I was called... To ride a plane for this mission..." she began and you just realized how much you missed her voice
"There was so much fire, explosions... Dead people..." she ran her hand through her hair
"My plane was shot down..." you tensed at those words
"I managed to land as smoothly as possible, but still smashed my head against the wheel. Once out of the plane, everything was spinning. There was so much noise, people screaming so loud. A bomb exploded near me and the force blew me a few meters away... It was so loud... My ears started ringing and it was all I could hear for a few minutes. I was so confused... I managed to get up again, but I just wish I didn't... " she suddenly stopped, her hands shaking
The room was so quiet. Maria squeezed your hand as a way to comfort you, but you thought it was more a way to comfort herself.
With one look to Ms. Simmons, you had a feeling that what was about to come was even worse. Carol stood still, not moving a muscle. Her eyes so distant you felt bad she had to go through it all again just to make you understand.
You looked at Ms. Simmons again and she mouthed a 'go'. You nodded and slowly stood up, careful on how you approached her. You kneeled down on her level and took her hand, immediately snapping her out of her trance.
Those brown eyes that you fell in love with now stared at you with so much loss in them, you felt like crying, but you didn't. Instead you took a deep breath and said
"It's ok... You're safe now."
She nodded.
"Once I got up..." she continued not breaking eye contact with you.
"Someone came from behind and knocked me out. Everything went black and, before I know it, I wake up tied to a chair..." your blood ran cold. You had a feeling how this was going to end
"They tortured me, trying to get information out of me, but I knew nothing. It was horrible... I was their toy to play with for a whole month... They did everything they could to break me... To the point of cutting my leg off."
Silence
Your gaze fell on her left leg, the one she was staring at.
"It's a prosthetic." she simply said, smiling sadly at you
That's why she was limping
You felt sick to your stomach. She's been through hell and back, but she was still here. Alive, breathing, holding your hand.
"Carol..." you didn't realize you were crying until she wiped a tear off with her thumb
"I'm so sorry..."
"You have nothing to be sorry about."
You nodded and looked at Maria, who looked deadly pale while staring at Carol's leg.
"Excuse me" she said and went out of the room, probably to go to the bathroom.
"But that's not it..." she suddenly said
There's more?!
"Once I was rescued... I... Ugh..." she looked at Ms. Simmons for help
The woman nodded understanding.
"Mrs. Danvers, it's better that you sit down for this."
"Why? What happened?" you ask alarmed, unwillingly leaving Carol's side to sit back on the couch
You looked between the two women and feared the worst when finally the psychologist decided to speak up
"The several head injuries that Mrs. Danvers sustained... She..."
"I don't remember you, or any of my life before the mission" Carol concluded, leaving you mouth wide open.
She doesn't remember...
