Carol never told you about her father, or any of her family for that matter. Evertime you brought up the subject she would tense and tell you she needs some air.

You were married to her for a year now and not once did you meet her family. You figured something happened between them so you decided to just let it go and not ask her again.

You were in the living room after having woken up to an empty side of the bed, realizing Carol was not home and actually never came back.
She had told you she would have had a drink with Maria and some of their friends so you didn't worry much and went to sleep, thinking she would be home sooner rather than later. But waking up at 4.00 am and not finding her anywhere was now affecting you in some way.

You quickly jumped out of bed and called Maria, your heart thumping against your ribcage as you started munching your fingernails, a bad habit you had when you were nervous

A relieved sigh escaped your lips when Maria picked up

"Y/N... Do you realize what time it is? What's going on? Did something happen?" Maria sleepy voice answered, making you frown in confusion

"You tell me what happened. Is Carol with you? She didn't come home"

"No she's not. Why would she be?" Maria asked, suddenly awake, concerned for her best friend's sake

Cold fear squeezed your heart

"She told me she was going out to get a few drinks with you and some other friends! Oh my God! Where is she? What if something's happened to her!"

"Y/N! Y/N! You need to calm down! I'm gonna go look for her if that will make you feel better..."

"No! I will go. I can't let you leave Monica alone just because I'm being paranoid" you interrupted her and apologized for waking her up

"It's ok. Keep me updated" she said before you hang up and ran to your room to change in a plain shirt and jeans

After putting your shoes on, you were about to run out of the house when the front door opened and revealed Carol's figure

"Oh my God! Where were you?! I was so worried something happened to you!" you exclaimed as you ran into her arms with tears in your eyes, noticing the painful hiss that escaped her lips that immediately made you pull away

She was strangely silent as she made her way to the living room to sit on the couch. Despite the dark, you could see her wobbling reach her destination while holding her side.

The moment she sat down and let out a whimper of pain you switched on a lamp and gasped at her appearance. Her lip was split and her right eye was swollen and starting to blacken. She had a cut running along her left cheek and her nose was broken, dried blood under her nostrils. Her left arm was holding her waist and you figured that if you were to lift her shirt you would find more bruises.

Tears streamed down your eyes as you slowly approached her, her eyes refusing to look at you. You kneeled down to her level and took her hand, gently stroking it with your thumb

"What happened?" you asked shakily, your voice barely above a whisper

Finally her eyes set on yours and you froze at the pain they emaneted, but she didn't say a word. She just looked at you and smiled, although it didn't reach her eyes as they started filling up with tears.

You honestly didn't know what to do. The strongest woman you have ever known was crying  and refusing to speak, too lost in her own world to really see you. She winced in pain when a sob escaped her mouth, making you push your feelings for this woman aside to patch her up, thanking the gods above for being a doctor.
