. I hope you enjoy! Requests are still coming along, my writer's block is too real!Bucky had been by your side ever since the fourth grade when you first arrived in New York. Life had never been simple, yours especially. But, despite the tribulations, Bucky was always there and never left. When you two were older, things shifted between you. Distance pushed you two apart, and although the two of you both didn't think anything of it. It was monumental for both of your lives.
It was your 17th birthday and you sit alone in the diner, it had been five months without Bucky in your life. Bucky had slipped out of your hands and became obsessed with picking up as many dimes as he could find and taking them for a dance. He never asked if you wanted to dance. A soft sigh leaves your lip as you stir your milkshake. You didn't have the money to be wasting it on a simple milkshake but it was your birthday. You were broke and now lived alone, and loneliness was the only truly consistent thing in your life. Steve was still around, but he never was as close to you as Bucky was.
"What did you get Y/N for her birthday Buck?" Steve asks as he holds a box of candy in his hands, he had helped his neighbors out to get money for your gift. Bucky shrugs, not showing much emotion. "I don't know about all that Steve. I shouldn't get her anything. Haven't even spoken to her in five whole months." Steve shakes his head and hands him the box of candy. "Go give it to her stupid." Bucky bites his lip for a moment and goes to track you down.
When he finds you, your sitting on the steps of your small apartment. After hearing his footsteps against the pavement you look up. "James...?" You asked softly. What was he doing here? He chuckles embarrassed and itches the back of his neck.
"That's me... here I got you this." He hands you the box and flashes a crooked smile.
"Steve got me this... I know you didn't even think of me." Bucky flinches at this. The girls he talked to never were filled with attitude like you. He liked that about you. Your hands file through the box of candy, looking it over. You carefully place the lid down and set it next to you. "Thanks for kinda last minute thinking of me James. You're so so kind." You huff and grab everything, standing up. Bucky looks to you offended.
"You know any girl would love for me to take them a gift, you're lucky you even got this time with me." A swift turn of the heel and the box of chocolate was hurled at Bucky, smacking him in the side of the head. He gasps and looks to you angrily. Steve watches and shakes his head, not believing how dumb his best friend was. He picks it up and hands it to Steve. Bucky was hurt, not only his face. But in general, how could you do that? Weren't you guys friends? Obviously not.
After that, you didn't get to talk to him for months. That was until you got the letter, it was from Bucky. A long letter."Dear Y/N,
I haven't been the friend I should have been. When you hit me with that chocolate box, it hit me. Literally, it hit me. I had abused this relationship to beyond repair. Steve tells me you are happy and working at a post office? I'm glad, you are happy. I'm sure you heard I'm off in the war, and Steve is coming soon. Wow, I wish I could have said goodbye. I miss your little eye rolls right about now, and the way you laughed. The moans of the men here are in no compare to your sweet voice I'm afraid. Please, don't take this as a pitiful letter. Do not think I'm just trying to compliment you back into my heart, Y/N. But if that would work, I would like to know. I miss you is all, and I love you. Why didn't I tell you that when we both knew I should have?"
Your shaking hands place down the letter. Too conflicted to even finish it. Love, was a bold word. And a word that was meant to be spoken months ago, and a word that wouldn't mean anything to be sent in some letter that may never reach him.
Steve. He was heading into the army soon. That night, at 8:34 PM, you rushed to his apartment and frantically beat on the door. The door opens and he looks up to you. "Steve! You're going into the army soon, no?" Confused, he nods. Explaining everything that was going to happen soon. Not caring much about his talking, other than he was going to be going into the army.
"Steve, if you see Bucky. I don't know if you will. If you see him, god tell him I love him. I love him so much." Steve sighs and smiles nodding. Without a word you hug him, and know he would keep his promise and tell him if he did see him.In the end, he did see Bucky and told him all you had said. Bucky was so ready to get home. Little did anyone know, Bucky wouldn't make it back to tell you his true intentions, neither would Steve. And you, you would marry and have a few children without ever knowing how the young Bucky Barnes ever felt about you truly.
