part 2 of my driver's license chapter

adding Steve into the mix;)

"Why couldn't he have been smarter?"

"What did I do wrong to deserve that?"

"Am I just a magnet to shitty men?"

The same questions flooded Steve's ears every night as he sat by your side, watching you drink wine. He didn't mind too much, you were fun to listen to. And he had nothing better to do anyways. So everyday, after dinner, he would be summoned up to your room. And everyday, he would make sure to be there right as you called. You couldn't help but love his company, he listened, he talked and as of lately, he would spend almost the whole evening laying next to you in bed. Never enjoying a glass of wine, though.
Though, you weren't the only one who was trying to get Steve to listen to the constant rants. Bucky was always trying to get Steve over to his place. Eventually, he gave in and told you he had to deal with some "Captain America stuff." Being understanding, you told him he would never have to feel obligated to listen to you. This made him internally smile. But he liked listening, more than he would ever admit.

Bucky's apartment was barren compared to your clothes hoarded, water bottle enveloped room. Steve made a mental note that he enjoyed your room better, made him feel comfortable. Bucky hugs Steve and sits down on the couch with him.

"And she thinks I would cheat?!" Buck ranted on to Steve. Steve never tried to over talk you, he just listened. But for some reason, as Bucky talked and talked about how you were the crazy and territorial one, a little radar inside of him dinged.

"Enough,Buck." Steve says sternly, tightening his jaw. "She had every right to believe you were cheating, you flirted with that woman right in front of not just her, but all of us. You made comments that any woman or man or anything would read into! Now stop name calling, because not once did she say a single bad thing about you. And- and I like Y/N. Okay? She's way too kind to have to deal with you." Steve stands, grabs his coat and is out the door. Bucky was baffled, how could his best friend take her side?

It was late when Steve arrived home that night, tossing his coat to a lounge chair and sighing as he rubbed his face. You peek from the corner and smile. "You're home late.. odd for you, old man." The sound of your voice causes him to perk up, and a warm sensation spreads across his cheeks. "Yeah odd for me, eh?" You laugh and nod your head, standing next to him. Steve glances down to you and bites his lip. Without thinking, which was rare for him, he leans down and leaves the most gentle kiss upon your lips. A slow kiss, with a lovely softness to it. Steve pulls away and clears his throat, and awkward smile pulling at his lips. Clearing your throat, you grin and look down. "That was wonderful, Steve." As silly as it sounded, this made him gleam inside.
You slowly put your hand on his cheek and rub it with your thumb. Steve looks to you and nods. "You deserve someone who won't make you be on your toes all of the time, someone who won't make you feel crazy for having issues with trust. Relationship is reassuring your partner, Bucky didn't get that. He took offense to you thinking he was sleeping around. That's not fair to the both of you." Steve says nodding. Quietly, you let out a small huff. "I'm glad you understand... I just wanted him to stay forever and be understanding. But I think he needs to fix himself before he can try and fix another. I love Bucky, and I wish the best. But there was only one person, as of lately, who has made me feel good. Genuine smiles, laughs. Good emotions, good moods always." Steve raises a brow and fixes his stance, adjusting his posture. "You, Steve. You have been here through my hardest. Even when Bucky and I- you always listened, helped first. Cared more... I deserve better and you deserve the best too. Steve Rogers, I do believe we should go out to dinner sometime. Just the two of us, no whining on past relationships. Good ol fashion getting to know eachother." Steve smiles brightly and leans down to press his forehead to yours.
"Oh, that would be lovely. I would be honored, Y/N L/N." Happily, you clasp your hands together and nod.

Bucky Barnes was no stranger to ill thoughts, negative emotions and bitter interactions. But, he never knew betrayal. Hydra threw him for a loop, put him through hell, made him question his purpose on earth and left a hefty dent in his self image. But betrayal? Never. He felt it now, a fury of envy and anger pulsed through his blood. Steve Rogers, the scrawny, patriotic man who had always had his back no matter what. Was sitting in the park, his arm draped over her. Her being you. You, god how did Bucky mess you up. You were a god sent, patient, kind, funny. Never letting him down, not once, never turning away when his thoughts got too much. When he couldn't be good, you stayed, defended and cared for him. That's all he asked for, and all you asked for was carefree love that was strong.. and forever. Your laugh echoed in his mind, and through the warm spring air. From afar, he watched as the two of you shared kisses, jokes and smiles. Why he continued to watch and listen, he couldn't answer. Shock, perhaps. Or maybe it was regret, he lost you. He couldn't give you the shelter, the stability nor the die hard love you craved. But you were so happy, he could see it in your eyes. Bright eyes, full of love and light. Bucky remembered waking up to those eyes, watching him rest. He remembered those eyes meeting his during a long meeting, and most of all he remembered the day the light left those eyes when she looked at him. Now, he knew you were happy, loved and gone. It hurt, but knowing you could be happy despite all the pain he put you through. It hurt less for him.

Finally, after watching the two of you disappear behind a crowd of oak trees, Bucky turned and started walking back to his apartment. Less anger in his steps. Regret heavy on his mind, because for Bucky. He thought about the forever, that would never be.
