"So please give a warm welcome to Thomas Sanders!" Mr Huggings said brightly, smiling at his half-interested class. Thomas wanted to curl up and die with nerves. "Thomas, could you sit next to Roman? He's the one staring out of the window."
Thomas nodded, walking over to the gestured boy. He had gelled hair that swept back along his head and bright green eyes. He had a red bag and a white shirt. He wasn't paying attention whatsoever.
Thomas coughed awkwardly when he reached him, gaining his attention. "You're Roman, right?"
"The one and only Roman Milton!" Roman grinned. "Most people call me Prince, for my heroic deeds!"
"Your heroic stupidity, more like..." Grumbled a sarcastic voice from behind them.
Roman glanced back at the boy sitting behind them, rolling his eyes. "Ignore him. So you're the new kid?"
"Yeah, Thomas Sanders..."
"Oh, the principal's' kid! Nice to meet you!" Thomas shuffled awkwardly, sitting down on the chair. "What lessons are you in today?"
He handed over his timetable and Roman compared it to his. "Cool, you're in my lessons today! And... for the most of the week, epic!" Roman grinned. "I'll show you around if you want!"
Thomas nodded. "Sounds good!"
.:*:.
It was the end of September, and Thomas had fitted in excellently with Roman. They were walking towards the PE dept, chattering.
"You are so lucky! I'd rather have Geography than PE!" Thomas groaned.
Roman wagged his finger in his face. "I'd rather have PE! I have to deal with Mrs Marshal for an hour and a half."
"Yeah, but still, you're sitting down."
Roman grinned than his face dropped. "Thomas, wait, stop-!"
Thomas crashed right into someone, knocking them forwards and stumbling backwards himself. "I am so sorry-" He began.
"Watch it, idiot!" Shouted the kid he ran into, snapping around.
"I-I am sorry!"
"Doesn't matter, you should still look where you're going!" He snapped, folding his arms.
Roman glared at the boy. This boy had dark brown hair with purple tips, with very pale skin. He wore eyeshadow on his bottom eyelids, and his eyes were a dark brown. "Man up, JD-Lightful, he's new!"
"What do I care? You'll be letting him use that excuse until it's his last year here, won't you, Princey?" The boy and Roman stared furiously at each other until the boy shrugged, walking away and stuffing hands in his pockets.
Thomas waited for a moment then asked incredulously, "Princey?"
Roman flushed red. "It's- uh, my nickname in the drama club. I go there during the last lessons and an hour after school each day because that's when it's on."
"So that's why you're never in Mr Lax's' history!"
"Uh, yeah, um... To be honest, I've kinda wanted to ask if you'd join?" The hesitation crept into his voice at the end of his sentence.
Thomas blinked as the bell rang. Roman started to walk away, as Thomas called after him, "Just one, right? I'll go once!" Roman glanced over his shoulder and Thomas started to head to his lesson.
.:*:.
Roman smiled at Thomas. "Come on, you'll love it!"
"Are you sure?"
"Yep, it'll be the best surprise!" Roman kept grinning as he dragged Thomas up the hill. That's when a cafe appeared into view.
It was pastel and gentle-looking. Roman pushed open the glass door. "Patton!" He called dramatically.
A boy with beautifully soft blonde hair poked his head from the counter. "Hey, kiddo! Oh, I've nearly finished my shift! I'll get you and your friend some free ice cream!"
"Don't you dare, Pat, that's against the job!" Said another person at the counter.
"Relax, Joan, I know you won't tell!" The kid, Patton, said, waving at them as he entered a room to the back.
Roman grinned at Thomas, dragging him to a booth. He sat him down, smiling. "You're going to love Patton, he's like a dad to everyone but his mental age is about seven."
"Sounds great." Thomas smiled back.
