Danny's POV
Three days later...
"Good afternoon, mother and father. The guards said you wanted to have a word with me." I say to my parents as I stand in front of them, hands behind my back.
I wouldn't say I'm scared of my parents, but they are very stern and strict, and almost all the time, they get what they want. It doesn't help that they are King and Queen, which only makes them seem more authoritative and intimidating. So, being summoned by them definitely made me a little anxious.
"Yes, my son. Have a seat." my father says, gesturing for him to sit in the seat.
I look around the palace, seeing the guards lined up and blocking the gates, while the maids are standing patiently at their spots, waiting to be given a task. I try to read everyone's expression, but they all seem emotionless, which only made it feel more tense. Now, I am worried about what I am about to be told.
I quickly take a seat with them around the small table on our verandah. One of our maids, Esther, quickly runs to our table with a glass cup and a bottle of juice on a tray, and she sets it on the table, pouring the juice into the cup for me. I smile and thank her gratefully, and she bows at us. As she is about to leave, my mother's voice stops her.
"So, Esther, didn't you think to bring my son a napkin as well? You expect him to drink a beverage without a napkin? What if he spills his drink?"
I roll my eyes at her behaviour and shake my head to myself. My mother and father always patronized the maids and I've tried to tell them to calm down, but to no avail. The maids are very nice and helpful, and I don't like the way my parents, especially my mother, treat them.
Esther puts her head down and frowns, waiting for my mom's next comment but I quickly speak up.
"No, I'm fine without a napkin. Thank you Esther, you can go." I tell her, trying to save her from my mom's next words.
She gives me a small smile, and bows at me before quickly scurrying off. My mother glares at me and I give her a shrug, breaking the contact with her.
My father clears his throat and I look up at him.
"Son, today I called you here, not for any bad reason, but to talk about the future and good of our kingdom." he starts, and I let out a sigh of relief knowing that I'm not in trouble.
I sit up straighter, as he has peaked my interest.
"As you know, you are almost eighteen and soon, I'll be too old to be King and you will succeed me. But, you cannot rule alone, and every King needs a Queen by his side to honor and serve him." he pauses and looks at my mother, who smiles at him.
I smirk and lean back in the seat.
"Wait, so you want me to start dating? Like, find a girlfriend?" I ask them, with my eyebrows raised. For a split second, an image of the village I visited flashes in my mind in that moment, but the thought quickly disappears. I don't even know why that happened, and I shake my head, as if actually shaking away the thought.
I take my cup to take a gulp of the juice to erase the thought from my head. I don't know her. Maybe I'm just dehydrated or something.
