Maadwoa's POV

I stand in front of the mirror in my bedroom and brush my curly hair up, before placing it in a puff and putting a light pink bow on it. I look down at my outfit and run my hands over the light blue blouse and denim overall dress. I put my black flats on and look at the time on the old, alarm clock. It's almost 1 in the afternoon. The only reason my aunt hasn't forced me out of my room yet is because today is my birthday. I think my birthday is the only day of the year that she allows me to sleep a bit longer (surprisingly).

I walk out of my room, closing the door behind me. I step outside onto the verandah, where I see my aunt, Uncle Kwame, Gifty, and Tyler all sitting in front of the porch. Gifty and Tyler are using their phones while Uncle Kwame and my aunt are chatting. When I close the door behind me, they all turn to me and everyone (except my aunt) claps.

"Happy birthday Maadwoa!" they exclaim, standing up from their seats. I smile as Gifty runs up to me and gives me a tight hug. Tyler follows behind her with a smile on his face.

"Happy birthday love." Gifty wishes before letting go of me, allowing me to breathe again.

Tyler also wraps his arms around me and pats my back.

"Happy birthday kid." he wishes and I scoff.

"We're the same age now." I tell him.

"But I turned eighteen first so I'm still your elder." he says, matter -of-factly.

Gifty rolls her eyes. "Keep bragging about being her elder, all you hair will turn grey and we'll see who will be talking."

I giggle at their behavior and my uncle walks over to us with my aunt.

"Happy birthday my niece. You're growing too fast." my uncle says sadly, before giving me a big hug.

"Thank you, Uncle. And I know, I wish I could stay a kid forever." I tell him jokingly and he laughs.

"I'm sorry I couldn't get you anything. I'll make it up to you soon, okay?" he tells me and I nod.

I know my uncle would get me a gift if he could. I don't even need anything. Just him being here is enough.

When he lets go of me, my aunt clears her throat and scratches her hair.

"Happy birthday, Maadwoa." she simply says, looking at my forehead instead of my eyes.

At least she even acknowledged my birthday. Before, she wouldn't wish me a happy birthday, she would just let me take a break from chores.

"Thank you, ma." I say, giving her a small smile.

Gifty gasps and jumps up in excitement before grabbing my wrist.

"Look, Ty and I got you a gift. Come see." she exclaims, pulling me over to her seat.

I sit in Ty's seat and he brings another chair for himself. Gifty grab the bag she brought and looks at me.

"Close your eyes." she instructs and I listen.

I hear the plastic bag moving as she pulls her gift out and I smile in excitement.

"Alright, open your eyes." Tyler tells me and I slowly do so.

Gifty holds up a small, black and gold purse, embezzled with sparkles. I gasp and giggle.

"Oh my, it's so pretty. Thank you!" I gratefully say, grabbing the whole bag and pulling them both in for a hug.

I hear my aunt scoff next to my uncle and he gives her a warning look. I ignore her because I don't want her negativity to ruin this day.

"Aw, you two are the best friends a girl could ask for. I love you guys. Even you, Ty." I jokingly say and he rolls his eyes.
