Maadwoa
"Come on ladies. Single file line." the ward instructs, as she holds out her hand to guide us towards the back door in a straight line.
Today, the wards decided that they would allow us prisoners to have a little 'recess' outside in the yard. They haven't done this for us before, so it was somewhat nice of them to let us get some fresh air.
However, as soon as I step outside, one of the guards motions for me to come back inside. I run over to her and wait expectantly for her to say something.
"You have a guest. Come with me to the visiting room while we inspect him."
She leads me back inside to the usual visiting room. Guesses about who it could be fills my head. She said "him", so it could be Tyler. But Tyler would come with Gifty. Maybe it is Uncle Kwame, but he just visited a couple days ago. My heart beats a bit faster when I think that it could be Danny. Our last interaction was terrible and I doubt he wants to see me again, but a small part of me wouldn't mind if it was him.
That part of me is stupid.
We finally get to the room and I sit, awaiting this mystery guest to be inspected. I tap my hands on the table in front of me, silently praying that this person won't give me a headache. A few minutes later, the door opens again and I whip my head to see who it is.
"Mr. Benson?" I question incredulously, shocked at the fact that the man was standing at the door.
"Maadwoa, I haven't gotten the chance to visit you yet."
I straighten my posture in the seat and shrug in surprise. Of all the people I imagined would come see me, I never even thought about Mr. Benson. We have only just met and I didn't think that he would even care to check on me. Maybe Gifty or Aunty Vera sent him here? Regardless, I appreciate him for this. People that have known me since birth, aka Aunty Nana, have not once stepped foot in here to make sure I'm even still alive.
"I didn't think you would visit me. H-how are you?"
He chuckles dryly as he makes his way to the chair across from me. Mr Benson takes his seat and folds his hands on the table.
"You are the one here, and you're asking me that? I should be asking you how you are."
I sigh and give him a tight-lipped smile. "I can't say I am okay, but at least I am alive. I guess."
He nods, and playfully bumps his fist against my handcuffed hands on the table. "That's the spirit. As long as you have life, nothing is impossible. You will get through this because I trust that the truth always comes out."
I nod, quickly blinking back the tears that I feel trying to form. I didn't want to cry in front of this man and I am also just sick of shedding tears over this situation. It's been a little over a month and I just have to get used to it.
"How are Aunty Vee and Johnny?" I question, changing the subject.
The man in front of me seems to freeze at the question. I can see his brows furrow as he slightly shakes his head and heaves a deep breath. I narrow my eyes at him, a bit concerned at his reaction.
"Is something wrong with them?" I ask, before he breaks eye contact with me. Although I've only seen this man a handful of times, it still seemed strange to see him so nervous and quiet. He always looked confident and energetic, so his behavior only compounded my fear.
He shakes his head, still refusing to make eye contact with me. At this point, my hands were twitching in the handcuffs. Surely if something happened, Gifty would have told me.
