_____________________Narrator
The usually ill-lit room had broken its dreary habit, as sunlight beamed into the cell. The glare of the Earth's natural heater hit the cheek of the dark-skinned girl, causing her to stir and awaken from her sleep. Maadwoa slowly opened her eyes, holding the back of her hand to her face to block the sun's rays. Though she found it strange that the room was suddenly illuminated, she softly smiled at the sight of it— she had barely seen the sun since being here.
Something about its beam seemed promising.
Maadwoa quietly sat up in the lower bed of the bunk, careful not to hit her head on the bed above. She set her gaze on the other bunks in the room, stretching her neck to see if the other women were still asleep. They all had their eyes closed, and judging from the soft snores from the top bunk, Gina was asleep too.
The thick-haired girl rested her back against the wall next to the bed, as she ran her hands through the twists in her hair. It had been a while since she properly washed it, as she only had access to diluted shampoo and she wasn't even sure what products were in it. She glumly sighed, unraveling and re-twisting one of the twists that fell in front of her face.
This was her usual morning routine— wake up before the rest of the ladies, sit up in the bed without waking them up, play with her hair, and wait for the guards to come in and wake everyone else up to start the day. She resented the fact that she had become so accustomed to this lifestyle but she ignored the anger because there was nothing she could do about it. It's times like these where she wishes that people who have the ability to control something, actually use that power— it is why she hoped that Danny interfered with the Nelsons' plan. She had not heard from him after they hung up yesterday— she couldn't tell whether that was a good or bad thing but how she wished it meant good news.
Thirty minutes went by, when two guards entered the cell and woke the rest of the ladies up. Maadwoa was already on her feet, holding her hands out to be cuffed before being escorted to the washroom.
Once there, her and the other ladies began to brush their teeth and wash their faces. They were only allowed to do that in the mornings, while their showers were always at night. Maadwoa couldn't even enjoy showers anymore; she used to love how warm and soothing they felt, but since being here, they have just felt cold and harsh.
After their morning routine was completed, the ladies gathered in a line to be escorted to the mini cafeteria for breakfast. Before the line even moved, a male officer could be seen bolting through the hallway, flailing his arms in the air as a way to get the women's attention. The man looked out of breath and as he neared the ladies, they could see that his brows were scrunched and eyes were wide with panic.
"Sarfo, what is the problem?" Officer Kate questioned, putting her arm out to keep him from getting too close to the inmates.
The stout officer bent his knees and leaned forward, catching his breath through pants. He scanned the line of the ladies as he did this, lifting a finger to point at all of us.
"W-which one of you is Maadwoa Koomson?" he queried, nervousness evident in his voice.
At the mention of her name, the young girl straightened her back before stepping out of the line. She figured that she just had another visitor, but then again, why would the guard look so frantic if it were just a casual visit?
