In the morning, my aunt went to go pick some food from the market to make something when she comes home. She woke me up and told me that the floors should be swept by the time she comes back. So, two hours later, the floors are swept and my side hurts from bending down so much.
I sit on the verandah and let out a huge sigh. After all that I've just done, she will still find something to scold me for. I'm so exhausted from the lack of sleep and the work I just did.
I see someone from the corner of my eye and look to see Gifty, my best friend. I smile and sit up straighter.
"Hey bestie!" she exclaims as she steps into the verandah and sits next to me. She is holding a bag and puts it down next to her.
Gifty lives around my area so I usually see her a lot, but I haven't seen her in a while.
I hug her in my seat and smile widely.
"I missed you. You look awesome." I tell her and she smiles .
"Thanks. My aunt is abroad right now and she's been sending me a lot of stuff. She sent me some new clothes, weave to braid my hair, and she even persuaded my mother to buy a phone for me." she tells me and I gasp.
"Wow, so you have a phone now?"
She nods and pulls out the phone.
"It's not an iPhone but I still love it. If only you had one, we could video chat all the time."
I frown and look away. It must be nice that her aunt cares about her so much to send her all that stuff from abroad. Imagine if my aunt was like that.
"Speaking of aunts, where is Auntie Nana?" Gifty asks me with a look of disgust on her face.
"She went to the market. You know she made me wake up early to sweep all the floors?" I tell Gifty and she scoffs, shaking her head.
"Why doesn't she stop bothering you? What have you done to her?"
I shrug and look away.
Gifty waves her hands and shakes her head.
"Nevermind that. I brought us some fried rice from your favorite restaurant." she says, pulling out two small containers from the bag.
I jump in my seat and smile. The only time I've been to that restaurant was when Gifty was celebrating her birthday and her mom took us out.
"I love you." I say to her with a cheeky smile and she giggles.
"You better. See the way you get so happy over food."
I giggle as she hands me one container of rice and a fork. I start eating and she does too. I almost moan at how delicious the food is. We eat in comfortable silence as we both enjoy the food. I hear a ring and look around confused.
Gifty pulls out her phone and giggles.
"It's me. I got a notification."
I nod and continue to eat. Gifty suddenly gasps at her phone and her eyes widen.
"What?" I ask, confused and nervous.
"Look at this!" she exclaims, putting the phone in front of me.
I look at it to see a headline saying 'Prince Danny Causing Confusion in Native Attire '. I look at the picture and see Prince Danny wearing traditional clothing and I stare at the picture in awe. He looks handsome in his native attire and he has such a bright smile on his face.
Prince Danny Forson. Son of King and Queen Forson. They rule this whole city, even us small villages. He is seventeen, like Gifty and I, and all the girls in our area are obsessed with him. Even though he's royal and rich, he's humble and kind to everyone, so I've heard. He visits our village sometimes because apparently he has a relative here, but no one knows who it is. I've never had the honor to meet him when he came but others have and they brag about how nice he was to them.
"Gifty, you almost made me choke because of a picture of the prince?"
"Sorry, but was I wrong? He should wear traditional more, he looks great. Don't try to deny it." she says.
"You have a boyfriend." I tell her with my eyebrows raised. Gifty and Tyler have been together for almost a year now and they are absolutely adorable.
"And I love him. Can't I just admire someone's beauty?"
I giggle and continue to eat my food. I hear footsteps approach us and I quickly look up to see my aunt. Gifty immediately smiles and stands up to greet her.
"Good morning, ma."
My aunt nods at her and looks over at me.
"What are you eating?" she asks me, placing her grocery bag on the floor.
This is not going to be good.
"Um, fried rice."
"Saa? And how did you get it? "
"Uh, ma. I brought it for her. I wanted to share some of my food with her." Gifty says nervously and I quietly put my food to the side.
"Are you going to start buying clothes for her too?" my aunt asks sarcastically and I sigh in annoyance.
"I --" Gifty starts but my aunt stops her.
"Did she tell you she needs food? Are you her caretaker? Are you trying to say I don't feed her in this house?" my aunt questions her and Gifty shakes her head.
"Please, ma. I just know she likes fried rice and I wanted to share. "
"It's okay. Your work here is done. Please, leave."
Gifty quickly grabs her bag and looks at me. I give her an apologetic look and she gives me a small smile. She quickly walks away without saying anything.
My aunt glares at me.
"Maadwoa, why do you like to test me? So do you go around begging for food?" she asks me, and I quickly shake my head.
"I won't let you paint me as a bad person. Stupid girl, throw the food away. Now!" she yells and I jump, quickly throwing the food on the ground.
"Since you've already had your meal, exclude yourself from dinner tonight. " she says, before grabbing the grocery bag and pushing past me.
*Saa - Really?
