Maadwoa looks through the produce and foods laid out on the wooden table in front of her, inspecting their freshness and size. Nana sent her to the market early in the morning to buy groceries for the house, claiming she was too busy to do it herself. Maadwoa wasn't angry about it but she didn't appreciate being woken up by a violent hand shaking her.

Since it's barely even nine in the morning, there were only two more people in the market with her, apart from the women selling, and so Maadwoa had access to the best supply of food and produce. She greets the woman selling, before pointing to all the items Nana always informed her to buy: tomatoes, peppers, onions, plantains, dried fish, ginger, garlic, and some other vegetables.

When the lady packs all the foods into separate bags, she looks up at Maadwoa and informs her of the price while tying a knot. The young girl cocks her head at the woman. It seems as if the prices have increased in comparison to last time.

"Auntie, please, are you sure? Last time I bought the same things for less than that."

The lady holds the bags in her hand after tying the knots and gives Maadwoa a straight face. It was too early in the morning for someone to be complaining about price.

"Young lady, please, these are the freshest and biggest produce hence why they cost more. If you cannot buy them, then you can go."

Maadwoa shakes her head as a sheepish smile appears on her face. Nana refused to give Maadwoa enough money to spend on the groceries and if she returns home without all the items, Nana will destroy her.

"Auntie, please reduce the price a bit. My mum did not give me enough money today but she really needs--"

The woman sucks her teeth, putting the bags back on the wooden table. "Then go! There are people who will want to buy this. How can you come here without enough money?"

A frown falls on Maadwoa's face as she tilts her head, trying to reason with the lady.

"Auntie please. If I pay some of it now, I will run home to tell my aunt and bring the rest of the money."

"No, we don't do that here. Just go."

The young girl lets out an anxious sigh as she places her hand on her hip. All she could think about was Nana stuffing her in the closet for failing to complete the task she was given. Why was this woman being so mean? Hasn't she ever been sent on an errand without enough money before? Feeling flustered, she glances around her as if money would just appear in front of her.

A dark blue Toyota approaches the direction of the market as Maadwoa helplessly pleads with the lady. The man in the car squints his eyes at the scene up ahead of him as he gets closer to the tiny street-side market. He sees a young girl with dark skin, average height, and a small scarf tied on her head. Mr. Benson raises his eyebrows when he notices that the girl is Gifty's friend, Maadwoa. From the moment she mentioned her name at Gifty's house, he has had a feeling that he knows her. There is something about her that is so familiar to him, yet he can't quite figure it out. He can't help but think there may be a connection between her and someone from his past. Even their names are the same. But it couldn't possibly be, it's probably just a coincidence.
