One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Today is my move in day and I couldn't be happier. Thankfully I never fully unpacked certain things, from school, so I can just put them in the truck. "My baby is really leaving." My dad says, as he packs one of my boxes in the truck. Both my parents decided to take today off, in order to help me. I really appreciate it because although I have money to pay movers, I'd rather use it towards things for my apartment. I literally have to buy furniture for every single room. I knew this moment would come, so I'm finally ready to dip into the $5,000 I kept, from my school refunds. Each semester, I saved a little over a thousand and put it in an account I don't use on a daily basis. I put the rest into my savings account. The only money I used on a daily is money I got from working. It worked out beautifully.

We put the last few things, in the truck and make the one hour drive, to my new place. "I can't believe you made me drive that thing." I tell my dad. I was terrified but he said I would be fine. "You made it right?" He laughs as he hands me the keys to my car. Thankfully he's going to return the truck for me. I'd rather not go through that again. I hurry into the office, since it's 4PM and they close at 5. I know it's going to take about 30 minutes, to sign the lease and do a move in walk through. "Hi Charity." Maya says. She's the one that's been helping me the most. "Hey, girl. I finally made it." I smile. "Good to see you. I have your lease here. Please take your time and go through it all. If you have any questions, let me know." "Thanks so much."

After signing the lease and doing the walk through, the unloading of the truck begins. "We're just going to unload the truck and go grocery shopping. We don't want you going later, by yourself." My mom says. Even though it's one of the safest cities in Georgia, you just never know. "I'm pretty sure she went to the store after midnight, in college." My dad says. He's honestly right but my mom is my mom. "So. The least we can do is try." My mom rolls her eyes. I just laugh at them. Thankfully most boxes are  clearly marked, so it was easy figuring out what goes where. It's just a matter of unpacking them. It won't be fun.

My parents gifted me $300 worth of groceries and other essentials, as my housewarming gift. They definitely spoil me. We say our final goodbyes and I am left with the damage: my shit. If Devin were my man, he'd definitely help me. Speaking of man, I decide to call Kai while I put away the groceries. He said he was only working a short day, today. "Hey, Charity. What's up?" He answers. "I'm here!" I say. "Finally. Are you all moved in?" "Barely. Everything is all over the place."  I laugh. "You need some help? I just woke up from a nap, so I should have some kind of energy." Kai laughs. "You know what, I'd really appreciate that." "Alright, but dinner on you." "Haha. Bet. I'll send you the address" I laugh, before hanging up. I text him my new address and gate code, to call my phone. There was no way I was living on my own, in a place that wasn't gated.

It only took Kai 10 minutes, to get here. "You literally live around the corner. It took five minutes waiting at a light down the street." Kai says. "Good. I'll feel a little better about being way out here." "Aw. You'll be fine. I mean I haven't heard you mention a boyfriend but do you mind if I ask if you have one?" His question surprises me. Although we've gotten closer, I made it my business not to talk about Marcus or Devin. "No, I don't. It's just me." I say, while putting the last cold item, in the fridge. "Well, I got you. You're cool people, so I'd hate for something to happen to you." "Aww, thank you. You know I've never heard you talk about a girlfriend either." I ask the question I've been dying to know the answer to. His face grows sad. "Sorry." I blurt out. What if she died? What if he's heart broken? What if he's gay? "No, it's okay. I just took a long break, from relationships, after my last one. I kinda messed that one up, real bad and I haven't been able to forgive myself." "Oh dang. Sorry." "Again, it's okay. I'm the one that lost sight of myself. I was with a girl, unofficially but I knew she was the one I was supposed to be with. I kept hoeing around, because I had it like that. One day, she got tired of my shit and blocked me, on everything. She just got engaged on Thanksgiving." I can tell it's eating him up.

"You wanna know why I'm single?" I ask, thinking it's the best time to share my story. "Do I wanna know?" Kai asks, kind of skeptical. "No judging." I hold out my pinkie, for him to pinkie promise. He complies. "So, before here, I was working at a hotel." I start. "We got a new manager, last year and we got cool. A little too cool." Kai's eyes widen and he cocks his head to the side. "Yea. So even though he was my manager and he was married, I indulged in the sin." "Woah." Kai says. "But someone I've wanted to date and I knew he was right for me, asked me to be his girlfriend, last Christmas. I said yes and I had every intention on letting the married guy go. I cheated on my boyfriend once, before realizing how stupid I was. Marcus, the manger, hated that. He became so aggressive. Then I found out he was abusing his wife." "How?" Kai asks. "I saw her bruised face, at the store. They're the couple I told you I kept seeing." "Damnnnn." "Her and I actually became cordial during this time and she was helping me out, when my boyfriend got arrested." "What he do?" "Nothing. Marcus had friends in the police department and they had a whole plan to pin my bruised arm on him. Only reason he was stopped was because my friends and I are relentless and we stayed at the police station, for hours. I called to check on Jasmine, Marcus' wife and he answered the phone. That's when he went crazy and she had to go to the hospital. Thankfully no bones were broken but she was bruised pretty bad."

Kai takes it all in, shaking his head. "It doesn't end there." I continue. "I found out Jasmine was cheating too. I saw her and the guy, twice." "What the hell?" Kai yelled. "Yep. She said she was gone leave Marcus for him since he cheated. Come to find out, she might have been lying." "Okay this is too much," Kai waves his hands in the air. "But continue." He laughs. "Marcus said he hired a private investigator a couple years ago and Jasmine was already cheating." Kai just hangs his mouth open. "Then I saw her and the guy at my ex's graduation and I find out the guy she's with is or has been cheating too. Their divorce is going to be a MESS!" I finally finish. "Wow, Charity. What the fuck?" He's so taken aback. Honestly, hearing me say all that has my spirit in a new funk. I'm going to be involved in this divorce. I just know it. "Well, I said I wouldn't judge you and I won't. I just hope when this shit all falls down, you're not still too involved. My uncle and I only knew that you were in some domestic violence situation and that it involved someone you worked with. They hid the police stuff and the fact that he was your manager. My uncle isn't going to like it, if all that comes out." Kai says a mouthful. "That's what I'm worried about."
