"Hey Shawn!" Laila chirped when she picked up the phone.
"Hey Laila, you think we could meet up sometime?"
"For sure!" She replied, "Haven't seen your healthy face in a while."
"Yeah, thank you again so much for watching Everley it means the world." I don't think I could be any more sincere.
"Of course Shawn I love both of the kids and you. I'd do it in a heart beat." I could hear her smile through the phone. "Anyways when and where do you want to meet?"
"How about dinner at Red Robin tomorrow night at 6? Would be good for the kids."
"Sounds perfect I'll see you then!"
I heard the beep signaling the call was over and set my phone down. From there I left my room with a pile of my sheets to put in the laundry. After the wave of sickness that entered the Mendes household I though doing a deep clean would be a good idea. That included laundry from me and all the kiddos and lots of antibacterial spray.
The next day passed in a blur of folding laundry, Scooby Doo movies and lots of playing. We even made a trip to the park. At 5:30 I packed up the diaper bag and buckled the kids into the car for a nice dinner out. Everley hummed along to the radio and I could hear Nolan's light coos of enjoyment. The sweet noises of my kids is quite an amazing distraction to the anxiety blooming in my chest. I didn't want to ask too much of Laila. She has been too good of a friend through all this that I wouldn't want to jeopardize anything. It was silly thinking I know all she would say is no and how stupid I was to ask, then all would probably go on as normal. I hope.
We pulled up all too soon to find Laila standing out front swaying to the pop music playing overhead. Once she saw me carrying a car seat and holding a bouncing toddlers hand her face lit up.
"Well isn't it my favorite little family!" I could feel Everley wrestling against my grip to run to Laila so I obliged. Laila has already crouched down to the group with open arms so my little curly haired monster could run right in. They gave each other a long giggly hug before Laila stood up and grabbed Everley's hand to wait for me to walk up.
"Hi Shawn."
"Hi Laila, how are you?" She stood up on her tippy toes to give me a peck on my cheek as a greeting since we both had hands occupied with children.
"I'm hungry! And glad to see you guys!" She replied.
"The feelings mutual." I smiled wide.
"Laila, you have Scooby snacks?" I heard Everley ask.
"Unfortunately, I don't. I didn't think I should bring them since we are eating dinner. Would fries be okay instead?"
"Yes!" Everley replied. If Everley like any kind of food fries would probably be in her top five.
"We watched Scooby Doo while we played today. She really wants to be like shaggy and Scooby and eat the snacks." I explained to Laila as we walked inside and eventually to our booth. "I had to explain to her that I couldn't get us a dog because we live in an apartment and doggy's can't live in apartments." Laila laughed at that.
Dinner went smoothly, I fed Nolan a bottle and Everley colored with crayons while she munched on fries. Laila and I'd conversation eventually hit a road block so I thought now would be the perfect time to ask her.
"So I have a pretty big and serious question to ask you."
"As long as your not proposing yet..." I laughed
"Let me ask you out first before that even gets talked about." We both laughed.
"Um anyways, I got asked to go on a mini tour. Do some shows get the fans excited for new music and all of that."
"Okay-"
"I don't think I can do it with both kids just because touring by myself is a lot of work as it is and with them. It's just not fair to them and all that. However I was thinking since I'll be busy and the kids need someone they trust and all that- I thought I'd ask you if you wanted to come on tour with me." I finished with an anxious filled exhale.
"Shawn-"Cliffhanger dun dun Dunn
