Chapter 38- Shaping Up

Shuuichi's heart was pounding. His ears seemed to be filled with an unbearably loud ringing that only got louder. Time slowed down and the hands on the clock hanging on his wall seemed to stop entirely. Shuuichi kept eye contact with the bear, scared that if he blinked the sure answer would be 'no', but then...

"Sure! Leave it to us!" The red and white bear replied with a curt nod. Shuuichi stared wide eyed. Time started again. Everything was fine.
"You're serious?! You'll seriously do it?!" He gaped. Monotaro raised what could be taken as an eyebrow at him and proceeded.
"I mean, why wouldn't I? It's only passing over a couple of items a little early,"
"Y-yes that's right," Shuuichi said quickly, kicking himself internally for even asking, "I just need all the objects to be passed on as quickly as you can." He emphasised the 'all' best he could, but he couldn't help but feel that Monotaro wouldn't be one to leave something out just to ruin his classmates chances of finding the truth.

"Of course! The monocubs will not let you down!" Monotaro gave him another nod and walked away to who knows where. Once he was gone Shuuichi nearly laughed out loud. That had seriously been too easy. He had hardly needed to suggest the idea to Monotaro for him to agree.
"Ha." Shuuichi breathed, a smile finally finding its way onto his face. This might actually not be that hard to pull off. He seemed to have the monocubs on his side and maybe even Monokuma would help him a little depending on what he asked.

He could rest easy for a bit. Rantaro would be able to lead everyone to the hidden doorway in the library which would be a start.

His stomach gave an unusually loud grumble and he grimaced. He was going to need to eat eventually. He had been putting it off all day because the chances of running into someone were relatively high. After Kokichi and Gonta had broken into his room he hadn't left. He had never felt this uncomfortable in front of any of them before. The looks that they gave him made his stomach curl up and he didn't even want to think about what they were thinking in the heads about him. All of them would hate him.

Shuuichi glanced over at the clock. It was way past 10pm. The dining hall would be locked and he was sure even if he did try to break in, there would be some kind of repercussions. He would have been fine to wait till morning but he was certain it would be packed as soon as or soon after the morning announcement. Maybe he would get off easily since he was of higher status in this reality. Making up his mind, Shuuichi unlocked his door and crept outside after making sure the area was deserted.

Although he knew no one would be out at this time of night, he was still on high alert. If anyone saw him out this late it would cause major discomfort for everyone. No one would feel safe if they knew their reason for being trapped here was creeping around the school at 12:00 at night. He made it to the dining hall without any fuss and proceeded to try and open the door. He had expected it to be locked, but it still came as a punch in the gut.

"Someone's up late~" a cackle sounded from right beside him causing him to jump in fright.
"Monokuma-" he began rather loudly, then remembering where he was, he lowered his tone, "What are you doing here?!" Monokuma laughed again and pushed himself off the banister and stood in front of Shuuichi, his paws on his hips,
"Was going to ask you the same question."
"I was going to get food." Shuuichi replied bluntly. He needn't have to explain himself to the bear.

"This late? Well I suppose a midnight snack never did anyone wrong." Monokuma monologued, "so what's stopping you? Having problems with doors?" He added innocently as if he had nothing to do with the locked door.
"A little... can you help or-"
"Sure I can, but I'm sure you could just open it yourself, lazybones," The bear went to move closer to the door and in turn Shuuichi took a step back from it. He saw the bear pull something out of some sort of pouch hidden in the seam of his fur and fiddle with it for a moment. The door swung open into complete darkness. "Bon Appetit!" Monokuma saluted and walked off.
