Meadow Fletcher

Meadow's eyes peered at the herd about a mile in-front of her and her family. Her mother, Joy Fletcher, looked down to her stopwatch, "How close are they now, Dan?" Joy asked Meadow's father. "Close, in about a minute they'll hit the campfire." Daniel Fletcher responded, his dirty hands grasped the binoculars up to his face as he peered through the dirty lens.

"Hey let's play a game." Ryan said, looking at his younger sister, "Like, I-Spy." Meadow turned around, looking at Ryan, he was a lot taller than she was. She was only 5"1 as Ryan was almost 5"7, they last time they check which felt like months ago. Meadow shook her head, "Maybe later." She muttered, her stomach growled. Joy gulped, she heard the tiny girl's stomach growl, "Soon, Peanut." Joy said, looking down, "There might be jerky in the trunk." "It's okay, I can wait." Meadow said, watching the monsters come close.

The stench danced throughout the air, growing only pungent as the herd became closer to the family. The noise was horrible.

"Now." Daniel said, taking the binoculars away from his eyes, "We can go, now."

The family turned towards the rusty station wagon, filled with their belongings. Joy clicked the stopwatch as they entered the car, quickly writing it in her blue journal.

Daniel turned the key in the ignition, the car sputtered but started and they were off, again.

Meadow's stomach only growled louder, Joy looked back at her, "I am sure there is something in the trunk, maybe Spaghetti-O's, you and Ryan can split." Joy looked extremely sad, she was sad. She didn't like seeing her kids basically starve to death. Daniel looked down. It was hard in the both of them. It was only a year into the apocalypse and already Ryan and Meadow have been tainted by the world. Ryan was a senior in high school. Meadow was in eighth grade.

Ryan nodded at his mother, turning back and rummaging through the trunk of the car. He found a water canteen, jerky, trail mix, and one can of something. He placed the stuff in the seat next to him, handing Meadow the trail mix, she quickly opened it, shoving a hand full in her mouth.

He then handed the jerky up front to his parents. They began to decline, "Mom, Dad, It's fine. We have trail mix and a can of sauce."
"You guys need it-"

"You guys need it." Ryan said, holding the bag in his hand. Joy took the bag, eating a nibble of jerky, handing a big piece to Daniel.

Ryan opened the can and it was a sauce can filled with Spaghetti-O's. "We are eating like kings tonight, Mimi." Ryan said looking at his sister. Her eyes widened, smiling, a tiny bit of walnut fell out of her mouth, "I am a queen, not a king, silly." Her mouth was full.

They switched, Meadow ate half of the can while Ryan ate some trail mix and looked out the window. Daniel held Joy's hand as he drove. Meadow smiled as she shoved another spoon full of sauce in her mouth.

10:53 PM

Daniel continued driving.

Meadow and Ryan pulled their seat down to make one big bed in the trunk of the car. They put down a big blue quilt and then two pillows. Meadow gave Joy a kiss on the cheek, "Night, Momma." Then Daniel, "Night, Pa. Love you."

"Night Mimi, love you." The parents spoke. "Night." Ryan said, already laying down in the trunk.

Meadow crawled her way to be back up by her brother, covering up with her blue blanket that Daniel got for her while he was scavenging for supplies early this year. Ryan was covered up with a giant gray blanket, sometimes if it were colder, they would use both blankets together. Tonight was hot and sticky.

She turned her back away from Ryan, Ryan doing the same. They both listened to the station wagon drive down the road. Ryan could never sleep, not this early anyway. It would take him a few hours to actually get tired. He was scared, he was always scared. They could run out of gas or bandits could stop them. Anything could possibly happen.

He gulped, listening to the quiet. Meadow was fast asleep, tiny snores fell out of her nose. Ryan laughed to himself, listening.

He was annoyed sometimes, they were always together. He wanted to go out by himself, a lot. He wanted to meet other kids his age, a lot. He wanted a place to call home. A place where they didn't have to move again. But in this world, there wasn't a place like that.

But maybe, just maybe, he was wrong.
