MEADOW FLETCHER AND CARL GRIMES
May 12, 2017

THE group got out of Atlanta. Meadow sat in the van, her back pressed against the wall of it, she listened, her eyes closed. Sleep wasn't on her mind, matter of fact she was scared to fall asleep. She listened as Carol and Rick talked on the walkies. Carol had the van pulled over on the side of the road, waiting for Rick to give them the okay.

She listened to the utter silence. No one talked. No one said anything. Everyone just waited. "Carol you copy?" "We're here." "We made it. It's gone." Meadow let out a deep sigh, opening her eyes, "I saw a couple of cars a few miles back." Meadow said, opening the door, "I'll be back." She shut the door, she began walking the opposite direction of the van, another door opened and closed. She turned around, Carl nodded at her. She continued walking. Carl followed her, speeding up to catch up to her. He did catch up to her.

"It sucks, Richmond didn't work out." Carl spoke up, "Yeah." "I'm sure we will find a place soon." "Maybe." Meadow kicked a rock. "I've noticed, you haven't been sleeping lately." "I can't." "Why?"

Meadow breathed out, her eyes fluttered opened and closed, "I'm scared, I've been scared since Atlanta, since the church." "You don't have to be scared anymore, we have each other's backs, always." "I know, I still am." Meadow looked down, her boots hitting the cracked pavement, "It's just, I have always been on the run, I have never really had a place that I could call my own. I wash just wishing that maybe we caught a break for once, you know?" Carl nodded his head, sweat dripping down his forehead.

There were three cars in the distance, they were all rusted and broken down, the tires popped. "Sometimes, I wish my parents were here. Right now, I don't."

They were closer to the rusty old cars, Meadow opened the first one, bottles and cans, some ammo. She put them in her cloth bag. "You know, this never gets old." Carl said, he waved his hands around, "Nothing but woods for miles, the fresh smell of nature, the silence." Meadow let out a breathless laugh, she peeked her head out from the car, "Some would say, astonishing silence." He danced, "There's no music, why are you dancing?" She let out a laugh, "Just feeling the nature groove," Carl did the sprinkler. "You're an idiot." "It's the prom, Meadow, live a little." Meadow grinned, she set the cloth bag in the car, "The prom?" She questioned, "Has the heat gone to your head, Carl Grimes?" He rolled his eyes, "Dance with me, Meadow," He held his hand out. Meadow walked over to him, slowly, she took his hand and she spun her around, she squealed, "Too fast!" He hushed her, "Shhh, the buzzkills might hear you." Carl laughed, referring to the walkers. Meadow shook her head, "They would've heard your loud mouth already."

"Hey!" Carl noticed how close they were, their bodies touching. The heat radiating off of her. They swayed back and forth to the silence. His heart beat racing rapidly in his chest, his palms began to sweat. "Thank you, Carl." Meadow whispered. "For what?" He swallowed, "Giving me the best "prom" ever." Meadow backed away from Carl, letting go once she heard the snarl in a distance, "See, it did hear your loud mouth." Meadow looked over at the walker. She took her knife out of the holster, walking up to it, she kicked the knees in, plunging it far in the head. "If that isn't a dose of reality then I don't know what is." She said, walking back over to the car.

They finished the sweep, walking back to the van, smiles on their faces. Rick was back, everyone looked at Meadow and Carl, watching them walk close, Meadow didn't see Ryan. Her heart dropped. She kept a steady pace, swallowing. Ryan got out of the car, he was bloody. She dropped her stuff, engulfing him in a hug. He hugged her back, his hand on her head, he squeezed her, a sob coming out of his mouth. Meadow did her best and looked over Ryan's shoulder, she saw and heard Sasha wail, she saw Sasha collapse the ground.

Tyreese was gone also.
