MEADOW FLETCHER'S POV
November 1, 2017
I readjusted my bookbag, "We should be there in six hours, we'll have to camp outside the walls for the night. There's a town an hour away from Hilltop." Carl rambled on.
I saw a car ahead, I stopped, looking at it, "We could get to that town faster. I'll need about twenty minutes."
The engine rumbled, Carl wanted to learn how to drive, I obliged. "Make sure you always keep two hands on the wheel." "Why?" I shrugged, "Daryl and Rick taught me that, I don't know." Carl smirked, putting his right hand on mine, "Whoops."
"Put your hand back on the wheel!" I shrieked, his hand didn't budge, "Right now!" "Chill out, We're fine. They probably told you that for their safety." "When you crash and I fly out the window, don't cry when I turn." I crossed my arms, his hand rested on my thigh, "That's not gonna happen, you and I both know it."
I searched through the glovebox, my hand landed on a CD. The paper was ripped, "I swear, if this is the song your dad had before." I muttered under my breath, putting the CD in the CD player. I clicked play, that awful music poured out of the speakers, instantly, I pushed the eject button. I rolled down the window, throwing the CD and the case out of it. "Screw that song." Carl let out a breathless laugh.
We got to the town, "Pull up in the alleyway, we need to make it look like no one's here. Just in case they drive through." Carl backed up into the alleyway. "Which building are we staying in?" I looked at the car, "Well, surprise, this is where we are staying." I recline my seat all the way back. The sun was setting, the town was quiet. It was peaceful.
Carl turned the car off, opening his bag, he handed me a granola bar, "No thanks, I'm good." Carl narrowed his eye, shaking the bar, "I said, no thanks." I closed my eyes, resting my hands against underneath my head. "Mi, you need to eat."
"I'm not hungry, I am tired though." I kept my eyes closed, I heard rustling. I felt the granola bar rest against my stomach, the sound of a seat reclining back also. Crickets filled the air.
We stopped, looking at the trucks and the cars in front of Hilltop. I looked back at Carl, my heart thumping, "You need to stay." Carl looked at me. I scoffed, shaking my head, "I made up the plan, you can't just do that to me." "It's for your safety, Mi." "My safety? What about yours, Carl? You can't do that to me." I gulped. "Please." He whispered, our bodies faced each other. His forehead resting on mine. "Carl, you can't-" "You need to look after Maggie." I sniffled a bit, nodding my head, "You can't die, Carl." "I can't promise I won't."
I looked down, he pressed his lips against my forehead. I looked back up into his eye. We leaned in close, our lips pressed against each others. It was slow, careful. He was the first to pull away, "I love you, Mi."
I looked at him for a bit, my heart raced, "Stay here with me then." I challenged. "I can't." I bit my lip, trying to stop myself from crying, "I love you too." My voice cracked. I watched him walk away. I pressed my hands against my eyes, wiping the tears away. I watched him jump into the back of the truck. I looked down, walking towards the walls of Hilltop.
I sat at the graves, looking at the green balloons tied around Abraham's. "You're here?" I looked over at Maggie, standing up, "You're okay?" "No, I'm not." She walked towards the graves, looking back at me, "But, I will be," She paused, "You came here alone?" "Yeah, it's just me." I lied. She nodded her head, "You staying?" I looked around, the pit of my stomach dropped, "Y-Yeah. For now."
She half-grinned, "Let's go eat lunch."
