Caught in headlights

41 18 11

Roads
Gravel and small stones
Flying into the air

Streetlamps and dimming skies
Rubber tires
And the smell of smoke

Horns and car lights
Cat eyes lit up
Cars and
So
So many people

Trees rustling in the wind
Rain beating down
On the glass panes
Of the car doors

Gales
Sweeping maple leaves
Across the road

Then out of nowhere
A rabbit
With a twitching nose
And widening eyes
Senses overloaded with terror
Time seems to stop
It's like a deer
Caught
In
Headlights

Screaming
So much noise
Too much light
Too intense for such a small creature
And lives that had not been lived
To the fullest extent

Swerving
Stones skittering
Like miniature dominos
All falling
All collapsing
All failing
All coming to an end

Then falling
Or was it flying?
Tumbling off the roads
Into the once peaceful meadows
That all looked the same
That everyone would glance at
And then ignore
Carried away in their own thoughts

What a sad way to go
One person thought
The screaming getting louder
A rising crescendo in a sea of blood
Then stillness
An eerie silence
Deathly still

What was it really?
It was the end
For all but the small creature
Who dashed into the meadows
Never to be seen again

Hi! Thank you for reading!

This is the first time I've ever written poetry in this style and yes, I'm aware that I left out punctuation (it's a deliberate mistake).

Also, this is my first poem that I've published since I got 2K reads (yay!), so I would personally like to thank all of my readers who have supported me along my journey.

Thank you, and have a great day/evening! Xx
