The String

Has anyone noticed how I hold my
sides when I walk?

Maybe I'm a tangled knot made of frail string, complex and easy to give up on,

Holding myself together with my own bare hands, unable to talk,

Scared of unravelling, tumbling to the ground, and becoming forgone.

But I am not porcelain; I won't shatter,

I will unravel, slowly, in a torturous way,

Falling apart, down into the cracked earth, I'll splatter,

Hopeless and naked for all eyes to see on display.

Maybe all my secrets will come to light,

But as complex as I am, I am uninteresting,

Just scared of what others will think of what I think in the night,

And the pain that it will cause will be crippling.

I have to hold myself together because no one else will,

Hiding the tears behind my eyelids attempting to hold on and last,

The pain I hold causes me to be still,

Frozen and I'll reminisce in the past.

I will never be able to flee,

Because if I do, my walls will break down,

My string fall apart, revealing me,

My bruised body, draped in shackles, unable to drown.

I will never escape these ties that bind me,

That contract into my skin,

Like barbed wire, drawing blood frequently,

The never-numbing pain making me wonder what could have been.

But the string cradles my body,

My movements decided by the puppeteer in the sky,

My bones occasionally breaking, my smile occasionally faltering-

But the string will one day be cut, and that is what gives me hope while living this half-life.

Hi! Thanks for reading my poetry collection- just bear in mind that these are all of my first poems. Also, I felt like I needed to explain the end.

For those who don't know, I was making a metaphorical reference to Greek mythology- they believed that their lives were represented by strings. When the string was cut, they would die. #sadending

So, on that happy note-

But seriously, please tell me your thoughts on my poetry- it would mean the world to me! Thanks! Xx
