Virgil was in denial.

He tried to focus on Declan. Declan made him happy. Sometimes, for a split second, he could forget about the world and how alone he was and Roman's death. But only for a split second.

He went through his text conversation with Remus at least twenty times.

He thought maybe it was too much, but Roman would have wanted that. He would've loved to see Remus get along with his friends after he died, like a classic story of two kingdoms.

Meanwhile, Declan received a call while doing paperwork and didn't so much as glance at his screen before entering the call.

"Hello, this is Declan Seymour."

"Yeah, no shit. I know that, babes."

Declan's entire body stiffened, then paled, and then warmth spread through him again and he smiled down at his phone. "Remy. You son of a bitch."

Even though they couldn't see each other, he could see the classic Remy smirk and twinkle in his eyes.

"Hell yeah!" Remy went on. "I lived, asshole. Don't fucking know how. But yeah. Apparently, there was some poisonous shit on that bullet. Now we need to figure out who would just have that."

"Take time to fully recover. The rest of us will handle the case on our own until you're better."

"Thanks. Dude, I've gotten more sleep here after getting shot in the stomach than I have in years, holy shit!"

Declan laughed lightly. Hearing his best friend's voice again made his eyes water. "I'm so glad you're okay."

Remy hummed in agreement.

The two detectives were stuck on a two hour call, neither wanting to ever hang up, until Declan got a call from Virgil and quickly texted Remy that he had to pick it up.

"Hey, V-"

"I think I know who did it, but I need Remy's input."

Declan stood up. "Wait. Really? Email the evidence to me so I can forward it to the team."

"O-Okay. Also, I got it from Remus, I dunno how he got it, though."

"I'll get in contact with him, don't worry."

A few minutes later, Declan received the email, which contained an audio file that he listened to through his headphones intensely.

"This was his too."

It took him a second to realize what was so terribly wrong about the clip. His breath caught in his throat and he closed his laptop.

No.
