(a/n: this chapter was really challenging to write and it took me several rewrites to get it the way i wanted it <3 also my motivation went down during quarantine for a while bc depression ✨✨

the other problem was that this was supposed to be three chapters but i thought it would be more effective to just have it as one.

but aaa! the beginning of the end!)

Virgil isolated himself for days.

He didn't check his phone. He just silenced it and couldn't look at it for another second. He knew there were people who wanted to contact him, but his heart couldn't take it.

Jennie barked and licked his face.

"Don't do that, I don't think tears would taste good," he muttered to her. It took every part of his being to get out and walk his dog. He just didn't want to go outside ever again.

He didn't know what happened to Patton after he was notified that Patton was arrested and he was off the case. Maybe he could've known if he checked his phone but he just wanted to escape.

If only there was an escape.

Soon, he was at Logan's doorstep while Jennie took a nap.

"Virgil," Logan breathed out. "You look like a mess."

"Yeah. You too," Virgil replied quietly.

"That's factual. Also, you haven't replied to any of my texts."

"I haven't checked my phone since... you know."

"Oh... Well, would you like to come in? I assume that's why you're here."

Virgil nodded and Logan let him in.

"How long do you think it'll take for life to be normal again?" Virgil whispered.

Logan shrugged. He stared out the window. "I don't believe it ever will. Not fully. I... I can't picture myself with anyone except Roman. I can't imagine loving anyone else as much as I love him."

My best friend murdered who could have been my husband, he thought sourly.

But he broke up with you, Logan. You couldn't have gotten married anyway.

He still loved you. You would have likely gotten back together.

What are you even doing?

His hand subconsciously went to the ring against his chest.

"What are you thinking?" Virgil asked.

Logan shook his head slightly. "I'm back to only having two friends. You and Remus."

Virgil almost smiled. "I'm your friend?"

He nodded. "This whole situation has been hard on our friendship, that's a given, but I want to be your friend. Even if it takes time before we can speak to each other semi-normally again."

The other nodded.

"But... I have a question. This never got answered and I still don't quite understand why this happened. But when you got framed, why did you say I framed you? Why were you so sure, as if you w-wanted to ruin my life?"

Virgil slumped over in shame. "I-I loved Patton too much. I was blind. I was in denial that he could do anything wrong, so it was between you and Remus and I chose you because you're the only other one close to me." He gulped. "I know I threw you under the bus because I was stupid. I don't think that's forgivable. Like, at all."
