When Y/N told his father he would be enlisting in the marines, he didn't get the response he expected. Instead of a proud 'way to go', he got an angry 'get out of here'. His father had been a marine, of course that was long before he was born.

With a somewhat defeated posture, he gathered his things he would need to go to basic training. His brothers came into the room, 15 year old Dean leading the way, 11 year old Sammy trailing behind. Y/N looked up as Dean sat on the bed next to Y/N's. Sam sat right beside him.

"What are you doing Y/N?" Y/N continued to pack his bag for a moment before holding a shirt in his hand. He looked down at it and dropped it next to his bag. He walked to the bed his brothers were on and made them scoot apart so he could sit in the middle.

"You guys remember how Dad was a marine?" His brothers nodded. "Well, I'm going to basic training in a few days. I've got to pack my bags up to get ready to leave." Sam looked up at him with a frown.

"You're gonna leave us?" Y/N sighed and raised his hand to push Sam's hair out of his face.

"I'm not gonna be gone for long. Basic Training is only 6 months long. Just think about it as if I'm going on a long hunt. I'll be back before you know it." Y/N smiled at his youngest brother. Sam half smiled back. Y/N turned his head to look over at Dean, who was staring down at his hands.

"You're being awfully quiet over here Dean-o. What's going through your mind?" Dean's hands clenched and he raised them to his head. His frame started to shake with the cries he held in. Y/N sighed and put his arm around Dean, not wanting to make Sam feel left out, he wrapped one around him as well. Y/N rubbed the shoulder of his younger brother, making his silent cries fade away. When he raised his head, he turned his body and wrapped his arms around his older brother, burying his face in the navy green shirt he was wearing.

"Dean, it's gonna be fine. You guys will be able to call me every week to talk. I'll tell you about training, you guys can tell me about hunts and school if Dad ever signs you up." Dean raised his head.

"That's not the point though. We've never been apart for more than a week, two at the most." Y/N nodded and raised his hand to pull Dean's head closer to him.

"I know buddy. I know. While I'm gone, you'll have to take care of Sammy. Lord knows he can't do it himself," he chuckled as he turned his head over to Sam. Sam frowned and knit his eyebrows together. Dean smiled and Y/N felt his body jump as he laughed. "You'll be holding down the fort when Dad's not here. So, number one rule?"

"Protect Sammy." They all laughed as the oldest two said it together. John pushed open the door to Y/N's room and walked over to them.

"What are you three laughing about?" He asked harshly. Y/N looked up and swallowed.

"Nothing, sir." John glared at him and looked at Sam.

"What were they laughing at?" Sam looked down and subconsciously moved toward Y/N more.

"How we would keep in contact with Y/N while he's gone." John looked over at Dean and noticed the marks his tears had left. He grabbed Dean's arm and pulled him up, making him stand in front of him.

"Were you crying?" Dean shook his head violently.

"No, sir." John grabbed his other arm and picked him up off the ground.

"Only girls cry, Dean. Are you a girl?!"

"No, sir," he whispered. Y/N stood up and grabbed Dean under his arms and pulled him away from their dad.

"Dad stop. He's allowed to cry. Real men cry, you wouldn't know anything about it though." Dean went and sat down next to Sam on the bed. They often had to witness Y/N and John getting into heated arguments that often led to fistfights.

"Oh really? You aren't a real man. You're just a boy who thinks you'll be able to leave me and your brothers here. That's not what a real man would do." John stepped forward and got in Y/N's face.

"You're right. A real man would take his kid brothers with him to get them away from you. I'll be back to do that in six months," he finished. John's facade broke for a moment, but came back 10 times stronger.

"You leave now." Y/N grabbed his bag that wasn't finished and walked out, sending one last look at his little brothers.

When he got to basic training, he was surprised at how easy it came for him. Most of his time was spent looking through old pictures or on the phone with his younger brothers. As he got better at what they were doing in training, the senior officers started to recognize it. He got promoted to Technical Sergeant within the first month.

By the end of his 6 months, he had gained 7 pounds of muscle on his body. At the graduation ceremony, he stood with his platoon at attention as the CO of the base gave a speech. He then explained how the tapping out process would work: The family of the marine will come and find their member. To be released from attention, they must be touched by a family member.

When the CO finished speaking, families were allowed to tap out their marine. Y/N looked around with his eyes, trying to find his father or his brothers. He didn't see them anywhere in the crowd. He sighed and turned his eyes back to the podium in front of him.

After a few minutes, most of the marines were with their families. Y/N wasn't one of them. He continued to stay at attention until he felt a small hand placed on his back.

He broke from attention and turned to see his little brother, smiling from ear to ear. He bent down and picked his little brother up, swinging him around before placing him back on the ground. Y/N then looked around and couldn't find anyone else.

"Where's Dad and Dean? Surely you didn't come alone." Sam shook his head.

"Dad didn't come. Uncle Bobby brought us!" Sam said loudly. Y/N chuckled and looked around. He still couldn't manage to find them. He picked up Sam and put him on his shoulders, making him taller than everyone there. Sam looked around and pointed when he found them. Y/N walked over to them with Sam still on his shoulders.

"Congrats kid. You're officially a marine." Y/N chuckled and set Sam back on his own feet. Dean stood next to Bobby with his arm in a sling. Y/N's smile turned to a glare. He motioned for Bobby to come away from the two boys.

"Did Dad do that?" Y/N asked pointing to the sling. Bobby looked down and sighed.

"About two weeks after you left." Y/N felt his face get warm.

"I'm gonna kill him, Bobby. I'm gonna do it." Bobby put his hands on the boy's shoulders.

"No, you ain't. You boys still need your daddy, even if you ain't wanna admit it. Go over there and be with your brothers. Forget about your dad for now." Y/N looked at him with a mixture of worry and anger. Bobby nodded and pushed him towards his brothers.

Y/N smiled as he walked over to his brothers. He gave Dean a hug and Dean gripped his uniform tightly. Y/N pulled Dean into his side and pulled Sam into his other side, walking them over to a bench where they could sit down. Bobby walked behind them and sat down with them, listening to all the stories he had to tell from his time in Basic Training.
