1985"pss laila, wake up," a small child's voice whispered in my ear. i slowly opened my eyes, being faced with my little sister, ruby. her eyes were swollen and red, probably from crying.
"what's wrong?" i asked, opening the covers for her, allowing her to climb in and cuddle up to me. "mommy and daddy are fighting again" she cried, soaking my shirt. "it's okay rue" i sighed, rubbing her back in circles.
"get some sleep okay? i'll be right back" i spoke, getting out from under the covers. "no! please don't leave me" she whined, holding out her hand. "i'll be right back, i promise" i told her, and quickly slipped out of the room.
could hear faint yelling coming from downstairs. my parents had been on a three week streak of arguing, and i was getting very distraught from it.
i crept down a few of the stairs and peered into the living room. dad was pacing back and forth, while mom was crying and holding onto a picture of our grandma. i listened for a few minutes before the yelling progressively got louder, making more tears run down my cheeks.
"stop!" i yelled, coming into view. "can you please stop arguing. ruby has been coming to my room every single night, crying because you two can't figure out your problems without making a huge deal. i'm sick of it! grow up for gods sake" i commented, making their eyes widen.
i abruptly turned on my heels and walked back upstairs, to my room. ruby was passed out on my bed, soft little snores coming from her. i sighed once again and climbed into bed with her, slinging my one arm over her small body.
maybe I should bring rue out for a girls day tomorrow, that way mom and dad can figure out their problems without us having to hear. yeah, i think i'll do that.
the sun shone through my curtains, onto my face, making it hard to sleep any longer. i squinted my eyes and fully opened them once i was used to the light. rue was still passed out, her soft snores now louder. i giggled a bit and hopped out of bed, heading to the bathroom for a shower.
as i stood in the hot water, i thought about what rue and i could do today. maybe go for breakfast and then shopping, yeah that sounds good enough.
i turned the water off, and got out, wrapping one towel and around my body and another around my head. i quickly looked at myself in the mirror and gave a nod before going back to my room to get a change of clothes.
when I re entered, rue was now nowhere to be found so i assumed she went back to her room. fine by me anyways. i quickly changed and brushed through my hair a few times before going to rue's room to see what she was up to.
when i walked into the room, she was drawing on her walls. well, she had chalkboard walls so she could draw whatever she wanted. "hey rue, get ready. we're gonna have a sisters day" i told her from the door frame.
she jumped up a bit and turned around with a smile on her face. i loved seeing her happy. "sure. what are we doing?" she asked, happily skipping over to her wardrobe. "breakfast and then shopping" i told her and she gave a thumbs up, pushing me out of her room.
i chuckled to myself and went back to my room, collecting a few things like my wallet and lip balm. by the time i was done, rue was already standing at my door, smiling like the cute psycho she is.
