1 year later:
“Congratulations to our graduating class of twenty-thirteen!”
Everyone erupted into cheers and tossed their caps into the air. I ran over to Riley and threw my arms around her, giving her a big hug. “We did it Ri! We finished high school!” I yelled joyfully over all of the noise. “Thank god!” she replied.
I looked around for my mom and found her talking to one of my teachers. I slowly and quietly made my way over to them, curious as to what they were talking about. “I loved having Payton as a student.” Mrs. Cole told my mom. I let out a sigh; happy I wasn’t getting in trouble.
Riley and I used to get into trouble a lot, especially when the boys were around. But that was the past, and we haven’t heard from them in about a year. “Party time.” Riley whispered in my ear. I turned to see her and her parents smiling at me.
“Congratulations baby!” My mom said, pulling my into a bone crushing hug. “Thanks mom.” I squeaked out, hugging her back. Riley’s mom and mine started a conversation while we discussed the party. “Everyone’s wearing a dress…” Riley groaned and scrunched up her nose.
The only dress I owned was the one from prom. I wasn’t exactly a dress kind of girl, and I know Riley wasn’t either. “I guess we should go shopping then?” I suggested. We told our parents where we were going, changed out of our robes, and headed to Riley’s new Audi TT. Yeah, her family had money, but Riley bought the car all on her own.
She had a job and did stuff like babysitting on the side since she was fifteen. She saved it up because this is the car she wanted. As for me, I had a job and I did save up some money, but I wanted to help my mom pay for her treatment so I put most of my money towards that.
My phone started vibrating nonstop in my pocket, telling me that somebody was calling me. I pulled it out and looked at the caller ID. “Hey mom.” I answered. “I almost forgot to tell you! I have a surprise waiting for you at home!” She said, full of excitement.
I told her that I’d be home right after I was done looking for a dress for tonight. She agreed and hung up. I told Riley about my mom’s surprise and her eyes lit up. “I wonder what it is!” She exclaimed.
I shrugged, knowing it wouldn’t be much. We got to the mall and picked out some cute dresses for tonight. I actually liked the one I bought. We left the mall and started driving to my house. Riley seemed more excited than I was about this ‘surprise’.
I sent my mom a text letting her know that we were on our way back but we were stopping off at Riley’s to get some of her things. Once we got to my house, I saw my mom standing outside in front of the most beautiful car I had ever seen. It was a pearl white Escalade. My dream car.
I jumped out of Riley’s car and ran over to her. “When did you get this?” I asked. “I’ve had it for a while, but it was dropped off during your graduation.” My mom explained. “Wow. You know I will be stealing this from you right?” I laughed.
“That won’t be happening. Cause it’s your car.” She said, holding out the keys towards me. My jaw dropped. How could she have gotten me this car! It was so expensive! “But…how?” I asked her. “Riley Helped. I told her I had it covered but she insisted that she pay half.” My mom smiled at Riley.
I looked over at my best friend who was grabbing her bag and our shopping bags out of the car. Once she got them all, I ran at her and gave her a hug, causing her to drop the bags. “Thank you so much Riley!” I told her. She hugged me back and said no problem.
We then ran into the house to start getting ready for the party. A lot has changed in the past year. I got taller, not by much but I still got taller. My mom and I moved into a smaller house that was perfect for the two of us. Money was tight now, but we were able to pay everything off.
Riley hadn’t grown at all. She was still short and I doubt she was going to be growing anymore. She was skinnier now. Since the whole Harry incident she started loosing weight. No she wasn’t starving herself, she ate healthy and went to the gym a lot now. At least she was staying healthy.
We hadn’t talked to the boys in a little under a year. They ended up getting put together into a group on the show and made it to the top three. They were signed to a record company and were now a world famous boy band. We were happy for them, but kind of pissed off at the same time.
About a month or two into the show, they stopped responding to our calls or texts, and they stopped calling and texting us. We gave up, accepting that they had forgotten about us. It was really hard, but we were fine now.
We saw their faces in magazines and heard their music on the radio all the time and we just accepted the fact that we would never have our best friends again. We had a life planned out though so we were going to be perfectly fine.
We finally finished getting ready and took a few pictures. I was wearing a black, one shoulder dress with a pair of light pink converse. I left my hair straight and I had my cross necklace around my neck, my silver band ring that had love written on it, and my four leaf clover ring that Niall got me.
He got it for me as a birthday present when we were in grade nine. He said he wanted to get me something that also meant a lot to him, so he got me a ring with an Irish symbol on it. How cute right?
Riley’s dress had a black top, and an off gray skirt with a black bow on it. She decided to wear a pair of black converse, her favorite ear cuff, and a necklace with a light pink bow on it. She didn’t feel like doing anything with her hair so she tied it back in a braid and put a beanie over her head.
“Ready?” I asked once we finished taking pictures. She nodded and we left, taking my new car.
