You where on your way to Charlotte town. your whole body was shaking of fear as you looked at your coughing mother. she had nearly fainted on the way towards the train station and you knew something was truly wrong.

everyone on the train was staring at her. she was trembling as she held on to your arm.

"we're almost there mother" you whispered as she coughed again. you clenched your jaw as you helped her onto the station.

you started to rush over to the doctor while supporting your mother. you stormed into the doctors office and made sure yout mother could sit down. "please someone help" you yelled as a boy came running towards you.

he widened his eyes. "Dr. Ward! a patient!" he yelled running into another room. you felt tears rolling down your cheek as your mother coughed again.

the boy and the docter carried your mother into a different room as they asked you to wait. so you waited.

you were terrified and trembling. you looked into the room as you saw the doctor talk to the boy. the boy shook his head with wide eyes. you didn't know what that meant and you started shaking again.

he noticed you were staring as he walked over to you out off the room. he scratched his head as he looked at you with a sad frown. "Miss, I have some news and it's better if you sit down," he said motioning towards a chair.

you widened your eyes a little as you were waiting for the bad news. "y-your mother she isn't gonna get better" he said as he sat down next to you.

you felt your whole world collapse. you gasped as you started trembling. tears were rolling down your eyes as you fighted against them. "how long?" you asked with a frown.

"we... we don't know yet. we'll have to check on her next week" he said as he layed his hand on your shoulder. he had tears in his eyes and you were surprised at how much he cared.

"I can't lose my mother" you sobbed louder as the boy looked at you with pain in his eyes. "I can't live without her... and my sister... I can't take care of a little girl all by myself" you started breathing heavily.

the boy squeezed your hand and tried to calm down. "breathe miss" he whispered. you followed his breathing as you calmed down.

"t-thank you. w-who are you?" you asked wiping away your tears as the boy didn't let go of your hand.

"I'm Gilbert. Gilbert Blythe. I work here every Saturday" he said feeling relieved you were breathing normally again. he didn't even notice he was still holding your hand.

"Thank you Mr. Blythe I'm Y/n L/n" you said as you gave him a weak smile.

"just G-gilbert is fine Miss L/n" he said returning the smile.

"just y/n is fine as well" you said squeezing his hand. he looked down with confusion as he had forgotten he was holding your hand. he blushed slightly and wiped away a tear on your face.

you felt a tingling sensation at his touch causing you to blush as well. you suddenly felt guilty for forgetting about your mother for a second.

you heard her cough as you started trembling again. Gilbert pulled you in for a hug and you cried into his shoulder. "how am I supposed to raise my little sister all by myself" you sobbed as Gilbert pulled you closer.

"I'm sure you'll figure it out. and I'll help if you want me to" he whispered into your ear.

"do you mean that?" you asked as you pulled away.

"I do. I know what it's like to feel like you have no one" he stared into your eyes as his became watery. he blinked his tears away as he looked to the floor not wanting to show his vulnerable side to someone he just met. even though he felt really drawn to you.
