you're on your way to school with your sister Jane and your brother Billy. none of you say a word, just looking around the forest, rather bored.

your mind wanders of to Gilbert Blythe, like it almost always did lately. you'd been talking to him alot, flirting actually and you hoped he would ask you out. you weren't sure if he would, sometimes he'd act really shy around you, other times he seemed full of confidence. he confused you, but you kinda liked that about him.

"why are you so happy?" Billy asked. you snapped out of your thoughts and realized you had a big smile on your face.

"nothing," you said, slightly turning your head away.

"she's thinking about a boy," Jane said smirking. you widened your eyes and nudged her shoulder.

you turned bright red, you knew Billy would either tease you till no end, or get overprotective. "no I'm not!" you said.

"who is it?" Billy asked, forcing you to look at him.

"no one!" you said, turning away again causing Jane to giggle.

"you can tell me! I'm your brother," Billy said. he had a small smirk on his face as he turned to Jane. "who is it?"

"fine... it's Gilbert," you said softly, before Jane could answer, making sure to avoid eye contact.

Billy's smirk fell and he widened his eyes. "Gilbert Blythe?" he asked.

"yea who else?" Jane chuckled.

"I was hoping any other Gilbert!" Billy said.

"why?" you asked looking up at Billy's shocked face.

"nothing, I just don't like him," Billy said. he tightly clenched his fists.

"well I do, and that's what matters," you said. "now please don't tell him, I'd be so embarrassed."

Billy sighed. "I won't, I just wish you were joking," he said.

"Gilbert's not that bad," you said nudging Billy's shoulder.

"yes he is, he punched me last year!" Billy exclaimed, all your hope of him possibly helping you was gone now.

"because you deserved it, he had just lost his father! now I don't wanna fight with you about this," you said, annoyed. "I'll see you after school, come on Jane."

you stomped off towards the schoolhouse and your friends, dragging Jane along with you and giving Gilbert a smile in the progress.

meanwhile Billy was standing with his friends, not paying attention to the conversation whatsoever.

he was glaring at Gilbert from across the field as Gilbert looked at you with sparkling eyes and a smile on his face, making Billy internally gag.

"Billy what's up with you?" Billy's head shot up.

"just a second I have to do something," he said pushing his friends out of his way.

he walked over at Gilbert as soon as you were inside, and he had returned to his book.

"Blythe, we need to talk," Billy said, causing Gilbert to look up from his book. he closed his book and stood up frowning.

"I don't want you going  anywhere near my sister again," Billy said, slightly puffing his chest to seem intimidating.

"you mean Y/n? why not?" Gilbert asked frowning, he let out a nervous chuckle, furiously hoping he misunderstood.

"she deserves better," Billy said plainly.
