ANNE
Anne woke up on Saturday almost at lunchtime. Her head hurt no more, and the cold that seemed to be freezing her bones had fortunately gone.
It was only her mind that brought her strange memories, vague thoughts that mingled between reality and fantasy, giving her the impression that the day before had not been like all the others. In addition to being alienated by his recent illness, he wondered what secrets were hidden in the depths of her brain that she could not remember?
She closed her eyes and had the feeling of hands touching her face, caressing her hair, and tender lips covering hers with soft, warm kisses. Lips that she knew very well, and that she would never forget even if she were on the other side of the world. Would Gilbert also haunt her even in her dreams? Was it not enough to have to deal with her feelings for him during the day? It was too much to think that even sleeping she couldn't have peace.
She sneezed slowly, then nestled between the blankets again. She felt better, despite the weakness that dominated her legs. She couldn't stand up and it bothered her a lot. The idea of spending another whole day in bed discouraged her, as she was too active to conform to idleness. Her body lacked movement, and she resented not being able to control it at her own will. Who knows, maybe she could convince Marilla to let her sit on the balcony?
She didn't remember much after Gilbert left her alone in her room on her last visit two days ago. As soon as he was gone, she crawled into bed, for her body had begun to hurt and that horrible cold had taken over all her joints. She had gotten into bed, praying for relief from sleep, but the rest she longed for had been disturbed by delusions caused by the high fever.
In the shadows of her unconsciousness she fled from her fears, she did not know exactly what terrified her, but she felt that she had to run far away, for right behind her there was a threat approaching. She saw herself in the middle of the forest, her tears mixed with the rain, leaving a trail of muddy steps where she passed. She ran to nowhere, screaming Gilbert's name, but the wind carried the sound of her voice far away and he could not hear her. She walked some more in the rain, her feet and legs were heavy and she panting from exhaustion. He saw Diana away in arms with Jerry, her happy laughter reaching out to her, but neither of them could see her, so Anne pressed her pace, and when it seemed she would reach them, he felt Marilla lovingly shaking her, pulling her out of that desolate dream.
- Anne. Time to wake up and go to school.
She tried to open her eyes, but hbasta They were so heavy that Anne wished she could go back to sleep.
- Come on, Anne. You need to get up.
The girl tried to answer, but her throat was sore and it was hard for her to pronounce the words. Her voice came out half hoarse when she spoke to Marilla...
- I can't get up. I'm so tired. Let me, Marilla.
The old lady was strange with that behavior. Anne never missed school, she loved studying, so Marilla couldn't understand her refusal to get up. She came closer and noticed that the girl's cheeks were too flushed. She put her hand on her forehead and realized that she was too hot. Nervous she said out loud.
- Good heavens! You're burning up. I'll have Matthew get a doctor right away... - Before looking at her brother, Marilla put Anne's blankets and pillow on.
Matthew returned two hours later accompanied by the doctor, who examined Anne and diagnosed her with a severe flu. He prescribed some painkillers for headaches and antipyretics to bring down the fever, and he also advised Marilla to prepare a light diet for her, in addition to recommending a few days of absolute rest.
