ANNE
The harvest season had resumed, and for this reason classes at the school had been suspended for a few days. So Anne would have more free time to devote herself to her favourite hobbies, such as visiting Diana more often, for example, as Gilbert would help Bash on the farm and they could only see each other at night. She'd been neglecting her friend lately, and she knew it, but with Marilla's illness and Gilbert's dating, her life had gotten too busy and she'd had to give up a few things, so she hoped to make up for her little shortfall that afternoon.
She and Diana agreed to have their afternoon coffee at the book club, as it had been a decade since either of them showed up there. So it seemed like a good idea to spend a few hours together in that space they had both built so long ago.
They met on the way to the forest and arrived together at the old club. When they opened the curtains they used as a door, Diana started coughing and said;
- My God, Anne! How dusty this place is!
- You're right, Diana. It's been a long time since I've been here, and its condition is pitiful. - He looked around and saw that the rains of the season had done some damage. Some of her books had boiled down because of the humidity and there were many dry leaves covering the ground. It was a good thing that Anne always kept items like broomsticks and cleaning mops there, so they could do a quick cleaning and leave everything clean and organized.
They brought iced tea in a thermos, as well as cornmeal cakes, toast and jelly. Anne served the drink in porcelain cups that she had borrowed from Marilla, thinking they would give a certain air of refinement in such a simple but charming environment.
- So, tell me about your courtship with Gilbert. I think they're getting along now, or am I mistaken? - Diana asked, while she was biting on toast with jelly.
- We're getting along wonderfully. Gilbert is an amazing person. When I first met him, I thought he was a little arrogant, too aware of his intelligence. But today I realize how wrong he was. He's kind and funny and very romantic. Every day I'm more in love with him. - As Anne spoke Diana saw her eyes shine brighter, making her even more beautiful, and she smiled satisfied.
- I've always told you that, but you never believed it. Gilbert's been like that since he was a child. He's never talked much, especially to girls, and when he had to talk to a classmate or acquaintance he was very shy. This has changed over the years as he has grown up, becoming a very handsome boy and coveted by all the girls. But he never showed much interest. He was always polite and formal, a perfect gentleman, but I've never seen him look twice at a girl except for you. I think that strong temper of yours has caught up with him. - said Diana, slapping Anne in the hand.
- I think he's got me good, too. - Anne smiled. - I never thought I'd fall in love. I thought I'd be an old maid like Marilla. Look what fate has prepared for me.
- It gave you a huge gift, that's what. Boys like Gilbert aren't easy to find.
- And Jerry'- Anne helped herself to some more tea.
- Jerry's perfect for me. He treats me like a real lady. We never fight over anything. He's very romantic too. When we're alone, he speaks such beautiful phrases of love in French that they bring tears to my eyes.
- What about your mother? Did she accept your courtship?
- After she got to know Jerry better, she started to change her mind about him. Oh, I forgot to tell you something new. Aunt Josephine wrote and said that when Jerry's old enough, she'll pay for his studies in Paris. Isn't that wonderful? Jerry's going to fulfill his dream of becoming a lawyer.
