GILBERT AND ANNE

Anne was taken by surprise by the wrath of Gilbert Blythe. She's never seen him so angry in her life. Even when they exchanged barbs, the boy remained calm and serene, always behaving like a gentleman.

But there in that instant it was another Gilbert who spoke and gestured non-stop, and Anne couldn't make him come to his senses. She tried to explain what had happened, why she was late, so she rehearsed an apology saying:

- Gilbert, I... - but he interrupted her abruptly:

- I know what you came here to do. You've come to finish what you started, haven't you? You wanted to see me defeated, hurt and wounded. You accepted my invitation just to humiliate me, and laugh in my face afterwards. Why, Anne? I know I hurt you in the past when I called you a redhead and you made me pay for it. But ever since I got back, I've been trying my best to make sure we had a good relationship. All I do or say is try to bring you closer to me. I know I don't always get it right, but my intentions are the best possible. Is it because of Ruby that you're treating me like this? I didn't mean to make you suffer, I just couldn't help it.

Anne listened to everything in amazement. What came over Gilbert to act like that? What happened to everybody? Two hysterical attacks on the same day, first Diana and now Gilbert. Did it have something to do with the season? Well, She had to shut him up so she could defend herself, but Gilbert showed no sign of stopping his list of charges against her. What was she supposed to do? "Think Anne. Where is your creativity when you need it?"

So she thought some more and an idea came to her, she didn't know if it would work, but she had to try. She took a step towards Gilbert, and without hesitation hung himself on his neck and gave him a kiss so deep that the boy felt everything around him spinning. After the minute of surprise had passed, Gilbert pulled Anne around his waist and glued his body to hers, deepening the kiss until they were short of breath. When they finally got away, they were both panting and looked each other in the eye for a few moments. Anne was the first to recover and whispered softly:

- Did I get your attention, Blythe? Are you going to let me talk or not? - Gilbert just shook his head, agreeing, he didn't trust himself to say anything now. That girl had set fire to his veins again, and he felt his body vibrate with her proximity.

So Anne told him everything that had happened to her from the time she'd gotten up in the morning until the moment she was trapped in Rachel's house, wondering if he was still there waiting for her.

- Do you understand now why I couldn't get here at the time we agreed? I'm sorry, Gilbert, for making you think I wasn't coming. - Anne said

- I'm sorry too, Anne. I should have waited for you to tell me what happened and then judge whether I should be angry or not. But I was so frustrated that you only accepted my invitation to make fun of me afterwards that I didn't think it through. - He tried to explain himself, ashamed of having poured all his anger on Anne.

- That's all right. If you want to cancel everything, I'll understand. - Anne said, relieved that Gilbert had forgiven her.

- Not at all. It's not that late, and I have a picnic basket specially prepared for us. – he took Anne's hand, and together they walked to the place where Gilbert had planned to take her.

They arrived at a clearing where there were colorful flowers everywhere, many leafy trees and a magnificent waterfall from where the falling water formed a charming lake. Anne was ecstatic at that vision, she had never imagined that there was such a splendid place on the outskirts of Avonlea.

- Gilbert, what a beautiful place! How did you find it? – Anne wanted to know,

- My father and I used to come here together. This is my refuge when I want to run away from everything and think about life.
