Drake gets all the dragons in the cave and Snowflake growls at him "Elena's smart enough to try and climb the mountain" Drake says petting the dragon "Why would they climb the volcano" Fishlegs asks "Well considering it's not snowing that badly it's the safests place to go. Fun fact, we're under the volcano" Drake explains "Yeah, but everything's frozen over" Snotlout counters, earning a nod. "There's an entrance inside they can use if they make the climb" "Hold on! If they make the climb?" Tuffnut asks looking at Drake confused and worried "If they're not shot down before they make it is what I mean by that".
"More arrows incoming" Astrid says speeding up her climb and Elena says "Well it's a good thing-", she stops talking when she hears rumbling and she looks up "Astrid press yourself as good as possible to the side and don't let go!" "I'll try!". When the avalance is over they continue the climb, pausing to prevent stray snow from pulling them down "Made it, can't feel my arms though" Elena says pulling Astrid up before sliding down "If we can't find a way in we'll freeze to death" Astrid says and they start digging around. "Found it" Elena says so they get in the cave "You two are alright" Drake says "Not quite" Astrid says pulling an arrow out of her shoulder "I'm fine, besides the fact I'm freezing" Elena says when everyone looks at her, Drake takes off his coat and puts it around Elena while Fishlegs and Hiccup go to help Astrid "Why would Drago be here?" Fishlegs asks "Well-" "The dragons, they were probably followed" Drake says and Hiccup sighs, how he had not noticed the age difference between the two he'll never know, but there were more important things to figure out.
They can't stay in the caves forever without getting even colder, but they can't think of something "Okay we'll go back to the tree house" Drake says pulling Elena into a protective hug "There's one problem with that" she says "The years without winter weather opened up more caves, than last night some caverns closed up again" "I left a trail of rocks-" Snotlout starts before he realizes what that means and everyone looks at fishlegs "She gets hungry in stressful situation" he says petting Meatlug. "So..." Hiccup trails off, not wanting to say it "We're lost" Astrid and Elena point out "I ran around here as a kid the entire time, so that's an achievement" "We could wait for the dragons to find us" Tuffnut says "Wait you lost sight of the dragons?" Astrid asks "The avalance must've scared them" Elena offers before thinking that statement over "Which makes no sense at all, there are two entrances to these cave, three counting the one Astrid and I used, one hidden near the tree house and the other one leads through a complex maze of tunnels my mother's screaming death made" "There must be intruders inside the caves, they can blend in with the surroundings because of their color" Drake says and he looks around the group, most of them are freezing cold "Okay, I'll find our dra-" "Quiet" Elena hisses and they hear footsteps and talking "Hide in the side rooms" she whispers so everyone scatters.
It's an hour later that Hiccup, Drake and Elena find Snowflake and Loki protecting the hatchlings "Drake" Hiccup says "I can't feel anything" "Already way passed that" Elena says from Drake's back, her legs had given out "The hatchlings are warm" Drake says feeling one "Whatever you do, do not fall asleep, I'll take Loki and find the others" "Easy for you to say" Elena mumbles "Snowflake, protect them and keep them awake", with that he takes off. "Don't fall asleep. Easier said than done" Hiccup mumbles putting some dragons around Elena "I thought you were used to colder temperatures" "I am, but when it freezes in these tunnels there's no way any human could survive, unless you have three heavy coats and a dragon, it's nighttime, that's the only time it freezes this badly in here" "Good to know that" Hiccup says, they hear a roar and both recognize it as the night furies "They're in trouble" Elena says and she tries to get up "This is so frustrating" "I can't call them" Hiccup says "Not without alerting everyone else", he covers his ears and turns to Elena when she calls the dragons "How did you do that?" "That is a dragon call, Midnight reacts to this one while Snowflake rarely leaves my side" "I noticed that" "By the way, you're lucky you didn't hurt his tail when you shot Toothless" "Why's that?", he earns a sigh and a shake of the head "Well without say half his tail he might not have been able to catch us quickly enough" Elena explains "True" "Meaning one of us could've lost a foot or something" "Not a fun thought". Midnight and Toothless enter the cave and curve around the two after dragging them closer to each other "Thanks girl" Elena mumbles settling against her "Yeah thanks bud" Hiccup says.
The next morning Drake finds the two where he left them, sort of "Elena, we need to get back to your tree house, your mother's back" "Going". At the tree house Elena hugs her mother "You need to go back, they found as many survivors as possible, Hiccup, you should go back to Berk and tell your father what happened" "Right away" he says "Come on gang, let's go back home". Drake chuckles when Elena stands up and wants to say something, but doesn't "What should I-" "You my girl, are chieftess now" "What no! I can't even get Drake to listen to me" "I do that to tease you sis" "Clearly".
Elena is glad to be back home, but she can't believe she's gonna be chieftess now "Ugh, am I not too young for the job?" she asks "No, I will teach you as you go, but you led the attack on the Red Death, you killed the dragon in our volcano, I think they will listen just fine" "Actually dad-" "Wasn't even in the air" Drake cuts her off "That and Hiccup saved your life" "Toothless did, he caught us". With Berk coming to visit with a peace treaty they aren't expecting Elena to be the one to greet them with the ceremonial belt on "Eh surprise?" she asks rubbing the back of her head, only to get hit on the head by her mother "I eh mean, welcome to our island" she says "As you can see they're still rebuilding, let me give you a tour". Stoick is impressed by the changes, but he also notices a few things "Not many survived the fire?" he asks "No" Elena says "But it certainly could be worse-" "Put out that fire right now!" Drake yells and Snowflake is chasing the wild dragon back to the right side of the hills and Elena clenches her fist "Ever since they attacked they've been attacking regularly, the only thing still completely standing are the stables because those are fireproof" she says "What if you relocate?" Stoick asks "How? We've send scouts all around the islands we discovered, if we leave this part of the archipelago we'll lose our control Stoick, who do you think keeps this part under control?" "You guys?" Hiccup asks walking over and he's hugged tightly "It has only been a week you know" he manages to says "But that looks great on you" "Thanks, but yeah, we keep the peace here, you know, it would work a lot better if our houses weren't getting destroyed every time". Stoick sighs "And are your scouts back?" "Yes, burned by dragon fire, nadder spine in arms, need I go on?" Elena asks "There's one island below sea level we could use, but eh... the dragons won't take us there" "What about Crystal island?" "Hiccup asks "That'd mean I have to seal the cave completely, besides, we barely survived them" "Elena there's a problem" Drake says "More wild dragons?" "No" "No more building materials?" "Not by a long shot" "Berseker ships heading this way?" "Yeah, why'd you say that last?" "Because I really don't feel like dealing with Dagur, hide the dragons and start fireproofing our house, starting with yours cause mine's already finished".
