After multiple twists and turns through corridors that looked nothing different from each other to A5 they finally arrived at the slightly familiar room. When they walked in Lucy directed him to where he usually sat during blood tests and she began to walk out of the door the two had just walked in through.
"Where you going?" The blond boy asked with a hint of disappointment gracing his voice.
"You've done these before and I haven't been here, what's the issue?" She asked in a slightly mocking tone.
"You said you'd be lookin' after me." He forced his lips to tremble and one fake tear to leave his big brown eyes, a crooked smile painted itself on Lucy's face.
"If you want me to stay I'll stay, just let me make sure it's okay with the person doing the test." She wandered off trying to find the doctor in charge of the round of tests and after a few minutes of searching, she finally found him.
"Excuse me, Doctor..." She dragged out the last word as she peered at his name badge "Doctor Montez, would it be okay if I stay in the room whilst subject A5 gets his blood test done?" Her question came out as more of beg and the doctor allowed her request.
"Thank you." She smiled sweetly before turning back to where A5 was sitting waiting.
"They lettin' you stay?" He asks hopefully and Lucy nods.
The doctor soon walked confidently into the room and Lucy could see A5 squirm uncomfortably in his chair. Why do I care so much, she asked herself, It's just another subject and it's for a good cause.
Without speaking first the doctor pulled out a large syringe and it soon began filling up with blood, the sight made her cringe and she instantly regretted staying in the room. After the doctor was done, he poured a drop or two of some liquid onto a cotton pad and told A5 to hold it to where his blood was just taken.
A5 and the doctor exchanged words for a minute or two and it gave Lucy a chance to fully take in the room she found herself in. The only colours she could see were white, black, a couple of varieties of grey and dark green from a plant hidden away in the furthest corner from her, it had been a long time since she'd seen a plant. It had been a long time since anyone had seen a plant and there one was, sitting there oblivious to how in this new world it's probably rarer than a pre-historic dinosaur.
"Dr, " The doctor's voice brought Lucy out of her thoughts and the small girl looked up to meet his face "Take subject A5 back to his room."
"Yes, Dr Montez." She looked back down to A5 and gestured for him to come with her which he did.
As they were walking down a corridor a guard grabbed Lucy's wrist tightly, she felt a bruise already forming on her skin.
"Yes?" She asked surprised, she tried to get out of his grip but was unsuccessful in her attempt. A5 tensed behind her as he saw the girl clearly in some sort of pain.
"The Assistant Director would like to speak with you." The guard said in a stern tone, his eyebrows furrowed as he spoke.
"Well, Janson can wait until I've taken A5 back to his room," Lucy replied trying to match his serious voice.
"He said he wants to see you now." His grip tightened even more around her wrist and she cringed as her hand turned a light purple colour.
"He can wait." She said finally and ripped her wrist from his large hand and walked off, as A5 passed the guard he gave him a sour look. The two arrived back at his room within 5 minutes.
"I had better go, " she sighed "See you tomorrow, A5." Just before she exited the door she heard A5 say something but she chose to ignore it, it probably wasn't important.
~~~
"You wanted to see me?" Lucy asked as she walked into Janson's office.
"Yes I did, please sit."
"What did you want?" She questioned as she sat on the edge of the chair in front of his desk.
"I was just wondering how you were, we haven't had a catch up in a while." His concern shocked Lucy, yes they were close but he rarely asked if she was alright.
"I uh, I'm fine..." Her voice sounded questionable and her lips gently pursed.
"Are you sure Lucy, you know I hate it when you lie to me." His eyes narrowed as if he was accused by her of lying.
"I'm sure just a little tired that's all."
"Okay, " he still didn't sound convinced but decided to drop the topic "Have you spoke to your brother recently?"
"Not since last week, I've been busy organising subject A5's test schedule to make sure he has them all done before his turn," Lucy answered honestly.
"Subject A5 is the third subject to be sent into The Maze am I correct?" From the tone of his voice, it was obvious he already knew the answer, he just wanted to test Lucy.
"That is correct sir."
"Will you stop it with the formalities, you speak to me as if I'm your boss." He shot her a smile and she chuckled slightly.
"You technically are my boss."
"Well don't think of me as your boss, think of me as your-"
"I know what to think of you as." He raised his eyebrows at her and she smirked as she walked out of his office.
"Remember what I said, Lucy." He rolled his hand in a circle gesturing for her to finish the sentence.
She took a deep sigh as if she didn't want to finish it but she did. "Don't get attached to subject A5." After that, she walked back to her room for the night.
~~~
She closed her door and rested her back against it. Moments go by of silent thoughts until she gets back up and goes to her bathroom.
The girl undoes her hair and lets it flow down past her shoulders wildly like flames. She cups her hands and fills them with water, splashing it all over her face to remove traces of the light amount of makeup she had piled on her skin this morning.
After she brushed her teeth she strolled over to her wardrobe, changing into some comfy sweats, and flopped on her bed.
She soon drifted into the world of slumber but her sleep was plagued by nightmares of her memories.
An ear-piercing scream ripped through Lucy's eardrums as she ran around her garden playing football. She quickly swung her head around to where she thought the noise came from and her brother soon came running out the house.
"Lucy!" He shouted as he ran into the garden, a few seconds after another figure appeared to exit the house, Lucy's mother.
"Lucy come on!" Eric grabbed her hand and they took off. Before she was pulled away however she got a quick glance at her mum. Her skin was incredibly pale with a slight green tint and sickly, large, dark veins sticking out from every part of her body. It looked like all it would take was one paper cut and the blood would come squirting out of her body. She moved inhumanely, her limbs moved in ways they shouldn't have been moving but somehow she didn't fall over.
Right behind their house was an alleyway that led to the main road that led right back around to their front door. Eric was slightly faster than Lucy so he was basically pulling her instead of running with her.
One minute of solid running went by and Lucy was already gasping for breath, she felt her knees give way underneath her and her hand slipped from her brother grip. He didn't notice for a few seconds giving their mother a chance to catch up and that she did, her nails dug into Lucy's skin and caused blood to seep from her, an agonising screech was heard.
She woke up screaming much as she had in her nightmare, tears streamed down her cheeks as she loudly sobbed while curling deeper into her bed. Nobody came to comfort her even though she hadn't expected anyone too.
